Australia’s Weather Is So Hot, New Colors Added To Weather Map

Australia weather map adds new colors for record breaking heat (Image via Bureau of Meteorology) The forecast in Australia: Hot, hot, hot—and getting hotter.

As a record-breaking heatwave hovers over many regions and territories (which are in their summer months now), the continent’s Bureau of Meteorology has added two new colors to the weather map to reflect the rising mercury.

The map currently shows the weather in orange tones at the top, which indicate temperatures 40 to 48 degrees Celsius. But forecasts are predicting off-the-charts weather. As a result, pink and purple will now cover temperatures over 50 degrees Celsius—should it climb that high.

For those rusty on the temperature conversion, that is a sweat-inducing 122 degrees Fahrenheit. (The record-setting temperature of 50.7 set in 1960 has, thankfully, still not been broken.)

"The forecast coming from the bureau's model is showing temperatures in excess of 50 degrees," said David Jones, head of the bureau's climate monitoring and prediction unit.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, a "dome of heat" over Australia is contributing to the record-breaking weather, which has gone on for six straight days with average maximum temps above 39 degrees Celcius (102 Fahrenheit). The trend seems likely to continue.

Adding to the misery, the searing heat is also fueling wildfires that continue to rage in southeastern Australia.

"You don't get conditions worse than this," Shane Fitzsimmons, New South Wales Rural Fire Service commissioner, told the Associated Press.

Australia isn’t the only place battling record high temperatures. Last year, the United States had its warmest year on record.

Considering the vast middle of the country is a desert...

I wonder if Siberia ever suffers from record low temperatures?

Or, as I like to call it, Summer in Georgia.

Suck it up, Aussies.

"Last year, the United States had its warmest year on record."

"On record" is key. An onion skin sliver of time compared to the whole of history.

But Liberals think only the era they inhabit is worthy of consideration.

On the other hand, Russia is experiencing the coldest winter in decades. Likely the world average hasn’t changed much or is slightly cooler.

History began the day a particular liberal was born.

This article is pure AGW propaganda. And it's self-contradictory:

"(The record-setting temperature of 50.7 set in 1960 has, thankfully, still not been broken.)"

The scare stuff is based on the usual AGW culprit, computer modeling.

I almost went to the currently hottest area in the early 1960s to mine for gem opal. One of the major reasons I didn't was because of temperature reports in the area of around 120F. and higher. There's a reason the opal diggers at Coober Pedy (Aboriginal for "white man in a hole") live in cool underground houses.

To add a little color (pun): The second highest temperature ever recorded on earth was in Death Valley, CA USA, at 134 deg F (57 deg C) in the 1920s. First place was in the Libya desert. (From Wiki)

(I suppose none of these begin to compare with The Lake of Fire, described in Revelation, for Satan, his angels, and liberal/sodomites.)

Temps in Celsius of course. The song “Beds are Burning” by Australia’s Midnight Oil has the lyrics:

>>Holden wrecks and boiling diesels
Steam in forty five degrees

and later:
>>Four wheels scare the cockatoos
From Kintore East to Yuendemu
The western desert lives and breathes
In forty five degrees

Huh, 45 doesn’t sound all that hot! (Yeah, if it
were Fahrenheit...)
Well, 45C = 113 F :)

What records are spoken of in the article - people here keep talking about record breaking temperatures and maximum records. I haven’t seen any records broken - I have seen speculation and lots of if this happens or if that happens. We haven’t had a good old fashioned summer like this for a few years but we have not even officially had a heatwave in South Australia - yes it’s hot - damn hot but people need to get a grip.

I think it was back in the late sixties - I remember about 10 days straight of over 100F some days as high as 110F - we didn’t even have air-conditioning then.

We have all become climate wimps!

Correction. December 30, 2012.

Death Valley IS hotter than Libya...

"After a yearlong investigation by a team of climate scientists, the World Meteorological Organization, the climate agency of the United Nations, announced this fall that it was throwing out a reading of 136.4 degrees claimed by the city of Al Aziziyah on Sept. 13, 1922. It made official what anyone who has soldiered through a Death Valley summer afternoon here could attest to. There is no place hotter in the world. A 134-degree reading registered on July 10, 1913, at Greenland Ranch here is now the official world record."

Death Valley IS hotter than Libya...

Thank you. That is quite interesting.
Reference?
Zane Grey wrote about Death Valley, long ago.
I may have the book yet.
I read it about 30 years ago.
I imagine the book was 50 years old then.

Google "Death Valley Hotter Than Libya and you'll find lots of articles from last week and from September 2012. You'll have to follow the links in them back to the original source. I just happened to spot it in our local newspaper last week.

I love Zane Grey's books, too. Haven't read any in a long while, though. Maybe you're thinking of his autobiographical "Tales of Lonely Trails" which I just discovered on a Google search.
