French wine lobby bristles at California 'Champagne' for Obama's inauguration

The French wine lobby is upset about the menu for Obama's inauguration and is penning a letter to the chairman of the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), The Hill has learned.

At issue is the menu's dessert course, which will be accompanied by “Korbel Natural, Special Inaugural Cuvée Champagne, California,” according to a press release from the inauguration committee. That description violates U.S. law, according to Sam Heitner, the director of the Champagne Bureau, a Washington lobby.

The inauguration committee however says the wine itself is labeled in accordance with U.S. law and will be correctly identified on the menu.

How cheezy. I had Korbel bubbly in the past. Whatever it was called, it was right up there with hard cider.

“Champagne” is a brand name and only comes from Champagne france

Everything else is supposed to be called “sparkling wine”

But this could easily be lost to common use - like “Kleenex” or “Xerox”

"Mon Dieu! Desist in the naming of your giggle juice or we shall taunt you a second time!" Never mind, looks like Barry issued a preemptive surrender. Now the French are really sore.

Agreed. As seldom as I side with the French, they are in the right on this one.

For the inaugural ball, I also recommend Gallo White Port.

They object to champagne? Champale would be more appropriate.

For the inaugural ball, I also recommend Gallo White Port.

Add some lemon juice to make WPLJ.

Years ago, California wine producers agreed to stop calling their sparkling wines "Champagne." They also stopped using names like Burgundy and Chablis. But I believe New York State wineries didn't sign on, and still market New York "Champagne."

It's a tough call. I don't blame France for trying to protect the name, but where do you stop? Cheddar cheese is made in places other than the English village of Cheddar. Swiss cheese is made everywhere.

“Champagne” is a brand name and only comes from Champagne france

Everything else is supposed to be called “sparkling wine”

As specified in the article, prior to 2006, the U.S. did not recognize the appelation champagne as being restricted to the Champagne region of France. Instead, any wine made by the classic Methode Champagnaise (also known as the Dom Perignon Method) was entitled to the designation "Champagne" -- all others were "Sparkling Wines".

Korbel Champagnes pre-date 2006 by more than a century and are entitled to the designation because they have always been made by the classic Methode Champagnaise. In fact, Korbel invented the automatic riddling rack -- which has since been adopted by many French champagne firms.

The Naturel is exceedingly dry, made with a dosage of additional champagne -- thus is even "purer" than most French champagnes.

They actually make some pretty decent stuff, but it’s not what is on most store shelves.

But for better bubbly, we like J.
