Boston declares public health emergency as nation battles severe flu outbreak
New York Daily News ^

The City of Boston declared a public health emergency Wednesday as the city and country deal with a historic outbreak of the flu. The influenza-ravaged city has seen about 700 confirmed cases of the virus since Oct. 1, the unofficial start of the flu season, according to the office of Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, who declared the state of emergency Wednesday morning.

By comparison, Boston saw 70 confirmed cases during last year’s flu season.

The outbreak has so far killed four Boston residents, all elderly, since the season unofficially began.

“This is the worst flu season we’ve seen since 2009, and people should take the threat of flu seriously,” Menino said in a release.

“This is not only a health concern,” he said, “but also an economic concern for families, and I’m urging residents to get vaccinated if they haven’t already. It’s the best thing you can do to protect yourself and your family. If you’re sick, please stay home from work or school.”

They have RomneyKKKare the very pattern for ObamaKKKare ~ so it should have been caught twice before it's recent discovery.

You cannot trust politician sponsored health care programs.

Those poor people in Massachusetts are all going to die before their times ~ and all because they put faith in these two yahoos.

“The Stand”

Or maybe an excuse for the marxist messiah to consider martial law.

There are three flu strains afoot this year. Currently available flu shots only work for 2 of them. The third is out there with nothing to stop it.

From what I’ve heard from friends, if they want to see a doctor within their lifetimes, they will probably travel to New Hampshire or Vermont and pay (cash, check or credit card) some doctor who used to practice in Mass. for a timely office visit. I’m not certain about all doctors there, but some charge an out-of-state fee to use the practice. Gotta love that free health care thingy!

I don’t know much either, but you seem to.

How many of these people who got the flu took the shots?

I am in the Boston area. Yesterday I had a chance to visit a friend at his work. I usually drop in once a month and have a coffee, some fishing talk, and leave. He owns a company that employs about 6 people.

When I called to see if I could visit, he told me all of them had the flu. Some were at home, and him and two others were in work with the flu. So I stayed away.

He said he had the flu for 13 days and when he got better he was going to get a flu shot because the flu strain he has is different from the flu shot strain, and he doesn't want to take a chance of getting that strain of flu.

- With so many people getting preventative flu shots in the Boston area, I wonder how we could have such an epidemic.

Whether to get a flu shot or not , to me is not an easy decision.
Based on my life's experience I do not get one.- tom

Boston has a population of 625,087.

700 cases of flu equals (zero point) .01119844%.

That hardly seems like a dangerous outbreak.

As a merciful leader, Obama will only be able to keep us safe by imposing martial law. He cares, he really cares.

If the link goes to the sign up page, click on the “home” tab and go to the article that 50% of Laredo, TX has a respiratory infection/flu from influenza A and B. Thank you, Mexico. Laredo's 2010 population was 236,091 so that's over 100,000 sick. Not good.

How many in Boston were elderly or had a low immunity, etc.?

OUTLAW THE FLU! BAN IT! There is no legitimate reason for someone to get the flu! Make it a crime to get the flu. 10-25 years in prison if you have the flu and don't report it. Register anyone who you suspect of having had the flu or planning on getting the flu in the future.

And now let's talk about guns & ammo!

I spoke to my sister down in Alabama this morning and she tells me that the hospitals in the Birmingham area are filling their beds with flu patients. My sis and her husband—both elderly like the OP—won’t even go to church and most other places because of fears of contracting the flu.

It may look like lots of people are getting the flu shot, but only about 30% of the population does get the shot. Now that there is this huge outbreak, more people may decide to get the shot, but it could be too late.

According to the CDC website, most of the cases have been confirmed to be the strain of flu that is covered by the shot. However, no vaccine is 100% effective, and with only about 1/3 of folks getting the shot anyway, that makes for huge numbers of sick people.

Even if you don’t feel you need the shot, you should get it to protect others around you - especially kids, pregnant women, and the elderly. What is the big deal about getting the shot?
