MONTREAL (AP) - A community in Quebec's Far North is calling for outside help to free about a dozen killer whales trapped under a vast stretch of sea ice.

Locals in Inukjuak said the mammals have gathered around a single hole in the ice - slightly bigger than a pickup truck - in a desperate bid to get oxygen.

"Fisheries and Oceans Canada is assessing the situation and are exploring every possible option, but will only be in a position to determine what - if anything - can be done once our specialists arrive on site," spokesman Frank Stanek said in a statement.

By the time they finish "assessing," (govt. red tape) the whales will have suffocated and drowned.

Yes, let’s hope they assess quickly and are able to help somehow.

It's not an unusual occurrence. It's happened before and will happen again.

Dude, they (the whales) live there. If they can't figure it out, they get shuffled off the mortal coil to never breed again.

Darwin award writ large.

Sucks to be them.

Don't do that. It hurts.

Natives Gone Soft ! ! !

Whales are made of meat.

Or has Gubment turned them into welfare cases?

900 miles of ice. hmm

first issue, make a bigger hole nearby.

cover a large area with some kind of fuel and light it. area should be at least 100x100. if that works... consider making another patch 1/4 mile away ... and find a way to draw attention to it... like a submerged line of glowing bulbs or a sound. draw the orcas to the new hole. repeat.

Yeah, they’ve only been around about 11 million years. Obviously an evolutionary failure. sarc/

Gee whiz, perhaps they should send the “assessment experts” in on a flipping ICE BREAKER, and then the situation would work itself out.

Then again, this is perfectly natural, right(?), and there have been thousands of years of nobody even noticing that some critters are in peril, and they either survivied, or perished, completely without ANY human intervention whatever.

Of all the whales, this group chose the worse possible name for public relations, it is even worse than that other whale group.

That is exactly the idea I had except I was thinking they could melt several large holes nearby so there is room enough for all of them to breath until an ice breaker can be brought in.

Were they eating the polar bears that got drowned by the global warming?

It still freezes in winter. It also used to stay frozen in summer and reflect sunlight back to space. The thing the worries the global warming people is that the open sea water is now absorbing all this sunlight and heating up the world.

i was joking! global warming is already falsified. we’ve had at least a decade of global cooling while CO2 has been constant or decreasing.

My God Jim! Somebody do something quick! If we hadn't f'd up the planet with CO2, the whales wouldn't have gone there in the first place in search of margaritas. This is unprecedented and has never happened in the history of the planet! Hasn't anybody ever seen Star Trek 4? We are dooooooooomed!!!!!!

Orcas deserve special recognition. They are good at what they do, and they have fun doing it.

And include Barney Frank. He can fart enough hot air to melt most of the icecap, as long as his butt is uncapped.
