Quinnipiac University poll released Wednesday morning shows race has tightened a bit since November.
Democratic gubernatorial candidate and McLean resident Terry McAuliffe and GOP candidate Ken Cuccinelli are virtually tied at the beginning of the race for the governor's seat in Virginia, according to a new poll released Wednesday morning.
The Quinnipiac University poll shows McAuliffe with 40 percent to Cuccinelli's 39 percent. One in five voters say they are undecided, according to the poll.
In November, a similar poll showed McAuliffe with 41 percent to Cuccinelli's 37 percent.
"While all three candidates for governor have run statewide previously, voter memories are short and they are little-known to Virginia voters," said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, in a news release.
Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling dropped out of the race in late 2012, citing a change in the nomination process as his reason for dropping out. There is speculation that Bolling may run as an independent.
In the past, nominees were chosen in a statewide primary, but the 2013 candidates will be chosen at a party convention.
I reluctantly concluded that the decision to change the method of nomination from a primary to a convention created too many obstacles for us to overcome, he said at the time. Bolling said he feared the convention system would only divide the state GOP, inhibiting its ability to reach and help Virginia residents.
"It goes without saying that with this relatively low level of voter recognition it will be some time before the shape of the race becomes clear," Brown said. "What is clear is that as an independent Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling faces a pretty stiff uphill climb should he decide to run as an independent."

This is a race between Ken a honest man and a worm.
Virginia Ping! If you want on or off the Virginia Ping List, please freepmail me.
The reality is that Virginia is no longer a red, conservative state, but has now become “purple” and is slowly “fading to blue”...
I plan to vote for Ken but expect Bolling to try to poison the well out of spite...if Virginia elects that slickster from Northern VA heaven help us.
Terry McAuliffe aka the Andrew Cuomo of the South.
Bolling said the other day he has no plan to run.
Who wouldn’t want Mr Global Crossing, Terry McAulffe, Clinton’s back scrubber, for governor?
Give him $100K and he will invest the state of VA out of debt and into the clover!
Plus he is such a dynamic speaker....
Obama’s Chicago vote machine will be all over the state for this race.
The Quinnipiac University poll’s bias about reflects the effect it will have.
According to my early-morning local news, 7 out of 10 voters don’t know who either of them are.
And the low-information morons will pick the winner again......
And we can thank the infestation into the northern counties from Maryland, DC and other foreign countries for that.
The democrap party has perfected vote cheating to such an extent that if McAuliffe wants the governorship he will be given it ... of course it will be a ‘close race’. The Republic is dead, folks. The oligarchs now rule, the democrips and republicants.
That's certainly good news.
That's not how he sounded in an article in this morning's Times Dispatch sounded to me.
Bill Bolling is a known liar and he is a puppet of the GOP elite.
I know all that, was just giving my take away from an article I read.
The liberal press is pushing for his run also.
“... that slickster from Northern VA ...”
is actually from Syracuse, NY.
7 out of 10 voters dont know who either of them are.”
...Cuccinelli is such a good man. He’s depicted as the evil capitalist by the media and will have a tough time winning. I’ll be there volunteering for him though.
“Dead Heat” means “The Punk” (Rush’s term for McAuliffe) can start writing his acceptance speech now.
I fully expect that in a off year election, it will be a GOP statewide sweep. The drones come out in presidential election years.
It was a sweep four years ago. A much-needed boost to our morale since Virginians had just voted for a democrat for president the first time since 1964 and LBJ the year before.
He is a jerk.
