AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst has called for state-funded specialized firearms training for teachers and administrators to guard against school shootings.
Dewhurst said school districts would nominate who they wanted to carry weapons on campus. The training would be more extensive than what is currently required for Texas concealed handgun license and include how to react technically and emotionally in an active shooter situation on a school campus.
Dewhurst offered no other details of his plan, and said the amount of state funding needed would depend on the number of school districts that participate and how many people want the training.
School districts would not be required to participate.

Any teacher that doesn't want to go to the wall to protect the little kids under their care does NOT deserve to be in the classroom.
Lt Gov Dewhurst is exactly right. Except I'd make it a requirement to obtain a teaching license that one learns how to protect the kids using deadly force.
Dirty Dewhurst gets it right on Texas guns, teachers & public schools.
There are too many times lately when I wish I were a Texan.
Come on down! We love our Bibles, our military and our firearms!
Doesn't matter, I'm still pushing to get rid of him in 2014.
I spent some time in San Angelo years ago as an enlisted guy. I even came to appreciate the pecan trees.
Had a tour in Oklahoma not too far from your northeastern border, and thought that was a very attractive part of the world.
I’ll be in El Paso next month.
Considering Whitney/ Whitney Lake area. Also Lake O’ the Pines region.
Have to be ‘reasonably’ close to DFW for work.
He made his bed, now he has to lay in it.
I teach in Texas and would definitely go for this program. As for all the hand wringing going on in the press over teachers having guns, I have a solution. Deputize any teacher who can pass a rigorous training regimen and allow them to carry weapons UN-concealed, along with a badge. Now, obviously these wouldn’t be regular sheriff’s deputies, since they wouldn’t have arrest powers nor could they detain anyone in a traffic stop. I think that this would have an immediate positive effect in schools.
A military retirement check isn’t rich, but it will provide basic creature comforts.
What good is gun training of liberal teachers when they refuse to carry?
I think the press is ridiculous as are teachers who would refuse to protect the young ones in their care with deadly force.
I would require law enforcement training, badges, and weapons for all new teacher licensees. The old ones will slowly work out of the system.
Then, if you walk into a school to harm the little ones, you’ll know before you arrive that you’re entering an armed camp legally able to use deadly force.
The People of Texas are wonderful. This is what we need. To allow children to be the victims of a deranged kook is criminal. As usual the liberals try to blame objects rather than people. We cant have uniformed police. They will be singled out and killed first. We need well armed responsible faculty and administration. This will pass in Texas.
If you tell me I have a choice between two teachers, one who wants to hide under a desk with little ones as a means of resisting terror, and one who wants to be able to stand up and fight, then every time I’m choosing the fighter. The hider isn’t worth spit to me.
If you aren’t willing to protect these little ones then you shouldn’t even be in the classroom.
Cost of living is low in Texas as well. Lots of support for retired military.
Spanking works. That whipp’n Cruz gave Dewhurst seems to have brought him around. He has been acting more conservative on the issues lately. Recently he said Texas government will be moving further to the right.
Texas does have its share of military installations.
I do think DFW area would be similar to my time in southeast Oklahoma.
True. According to my brother-in-law in Keller, they both have weather that tries to kill you.
Sorry, forgot to put in the humour tag...
It's big & geography diverse.
Reminds me of this sign popping up everywhere.
Hopefully I’ll be in Texas by the time July comes. What do you guys do for Independence Day?
“Said.” Talk is cheap. DewCrist still needs to go.
Our independence Day is on March 2nd.
Our independence Day is on March 2nd.
Sweat. A lot.
Watch those rattlers when they are shedding their skin......about half blind and just ain’t theirselves.
BUT, when they are finished you cannot tell the difference between the new one and the old one.
I noticed in today’s paper that a local gun shop is offering FREE concealed carry training to public school teachers.
I’m not a native Texan so I wouldn’t celebrate Texas’ independence day. I meant July 4th.
It’ll be there for you when you’re ready to move!
