MONTPELIER, Ohio Janitors at Montpelier Exempted Village Schools are equipped with brooms, sponges, and dustpans to keep classrooms, corridors, and bathrooms clean and tidy.
Within the next several months, the custodial staff will be toting handguns as they carry out their daily duties in the school district buildings.
In reaction to last months deadly shooting rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, the board of education of this Williams County school district Wednesday night unanimously voted for four janitors to carry handguns on the K-12 campus.
School officials say having armed personnel, which may be a first for any school system in Ohio, is designed to thwart incidents of violence and prevent what happened in Newtown, Conn., from occurring in Montpelier.
Sitting back and doing nothing and hoping it doesnt happen to you is just not good policy anymore. There is a need for schools to beef up their security measures, Supertendent Jamie Grime told The Blade on Thursday.
Having guns in the hands of the right people are not a hindrance. They are a means to protect.
School board President Larry Martin said that, while the school district began looking into arming employees about six months ago, the board didnt announce the concept publicly until Wednesdays monthly meeting.
He said the Dec. 14 slayings of 20 children and six staff at Sandy Hook heightened the decision to put the resolution on the board agenda.
Our main goal is to offer safety for our students while they are in the classrooms and in the building, Mr. Martin said. We have to do something and this seems like the most logical, reasonable course to go with.

“I warned you about sticking gum under your desk, little man.”
There’s a decent gun show over over in Montpelier at the county fair grounds every month. Picked up an Uzi there actually. The school in question is about 15 miles from my house in good old Ohio district 5 where guns are a kind of a big effin deal.
>> Montpelier schools OKs armed janitors
Kinda’ makes sense if the goal is to push a broom.
I like rural Ohio.
The city? Not so much.
You know, we did not call them Janitors in Ohio at the school.
We called them Custodians.
Achhhh!!
They are probably already armed.
>> Doont goo dissin me aboot.
Never — I’ve busted my fair share of knuckle... :)
We’re I said school board I’d advertise that trained school staff are armed and only carry change for a 20$ ..... True or not. Post the sign till you can train em and implement the program as advertised...aside from that 20$ stuff......
If you advertised that school staff carried change for a $20 the kids would never give them any peace. lol
....lol ....agree !
Stay safe Tiger !
A little wardrobe enhancement for the well prepared teacher.
... What a stupid decision. Let those who know how to use their weapons carry in the school; any teacher, any member of staff, and spend a grand for a shotgun and ammo to keep in the school office.
Instead, you make four walking targets. The beauty of concealed carry is that the bad guys have no idea who is carrying, so best not to engage them and find out.
Jeeez - get with the program. /Sarc
CCW for half of the adults at any school could really discourage your average nutcase and a Beslan scenario would be much harder to initiate and give response teams time to arrive before the unimaginable.
Bump for solid tactical advice. ;-)
