Former presidents have to give up rides on Air Force One. But now they don't have to give up being shadowed by the armed-and-earpieced bodyguards of the Secret Service.

President Barack Obama on Thursday signed into a law a measure giving him, George W. Bush and future former presidents and their spouses lifetime Secret Service protection, the White House announced.

The legislation, crafted by Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy of South Carolina, rolls back a mid-1990s law that imposed a 10-year limit on Secret Service protection for former presidents. Bush would have been the first former commander in chief affected.

Every damn one of the former el-presidentes can afford to hire their own armed guards. All of them milked the system for millions and still expect the taxpayers to pay for them to live like kings for the rest of their lives.
F*** em and the horse(s) they rode in on.

At what point do former elected officials become simple citizens again?

And his kids are in a Quaker school surrounded by armed guards. How’s that grab you Mr. and Mrs. North America?

I agree! If they want protection, then they can pay for it. They already get generous lifetime pensions and expense accounts!

I find it ironic that Richard Nixon, our most reviled modern ex-president, was the only one to ever relinquish Secret Service protection.

What’s the matter Prez, getting a little warm under the collar, think a few million might be out to get ya or something. Get your own body guards with your own money not taxpayers. you SOB.

As long as the families don’t accept any compensation or rent for providing facilities for the SS.

As soon as the new official says "So help me God". Anyway that is the way it is SUPPOSED to be. George Washington declined to run again because we fought to defeat a king and he did not want the new republic to have a king. Sadly we have slowly crept back to the President as King mentality. Just take a look at the number of "attendants" that follow the President around, and I am not even counting the SS contingent. It is sad, sad what this country is becoming. I cry for it.

I bet you are more likely to be targeted because you are a taxi cab driver or because you are a woman than because you are an ex-President. What makes their lives so special just because they won a popularity contest? If there is equal protection under the law then it should be equal.

Richard Nixon lived in metro New York City with private security. Herbert Hoover lived in New York for 31 years after leaving office with no Secret Service.

I believe Truman was also SS free...the Truman’s were exemplary as to their humbleness and station in life...they knew they served the people, not the other way around.
