Glenn Beck’s Dream of Building an Entire City-Theme Park Hybrid Called ‘Independence, USA’
The Blaze ^ | 1-11-13 | Tiffany Gabbay/Jason Howerton

Those familiar with Ayn Rand’s famed novel, Atlas Shrugged, knows the question: “Who is John Galt?”

The answer comes at the end of the popular novel and reveals that Galt is simply (or actually, not so simply) a creator. A philosopher. An inventor. Someone who, as Glenn Beck explained in his studio Thursday evening, refused to live under the oppression of an all-powerful government bent on tamping down the very incentives that give great minds a chance to flourish.

Galt railed against the collectivist system and believed that only through freedom could people tap into their divine potential to become creators of their own: leaders, businessmen, artists, and so on. The community that was created in this spirit was called “Galt’s Gultch,” and it is that very ideal Beck strives to emulate in his own enterprises. In fact, that’s why he moved to Texas.

Drawing on this free market, limited-government model, Beck said he aspires to build an actual community based on just that. While the price tag of building an actual city-slash-theme park is steep at an estimated $2 billion, Beck said he feels compelled to move forward with his ultimate plan “once piece at a time.” Having toured “three possible sites in three different states” and having spoken to two governors already, Beck is serious in his goals.

Thus, Thursday night Beck unveiled yet another component in his American Dream Labs — an entire city called “Independence, USA.”

Cuidado America, cuidado. There once was a TV evangelist who concocted a scheme like that. Results were not too good. I’m not saying that GB is taking anyone there but forewarned is forearmed.

"only through freedom could people tap into their divine potential"

How many times does this have to be proven to make people pay attention?

Nuts, I was thinking the same thing. Would Glenn’s sidekick have to wear large amounts of makeup?

Will they serve Kool Aid? Why go to this retirement community? Whats so special there? Now if it was something like Branson, MO with acts and country music—maybe get some of those Texas Polygamous Mormons to run a restaurant.... maybe a Museum on the Rise and fall of the Tea Party, Put up a stature of Reagan 40 feet tall... In the town center a Liberty Tree? with lanterns all over it. Special museums and maybe a film studio where they make real movies about real Americans. I guess we can dream...

I’m reminded of the time Beck started saying that people should stop dressing up in Founding Father costumes and Revolutionary garb at the tea party rallies. I couldn’t quite entirely gauge his reasoning, but he seemed to think there was something too hokey or unserious about it. Or maybe even because he was even reacting the media using it as something to deride as silly and make fun of the whole tea party cause. I disagreed. Even though it might have had an element of old-fashioned hokeyness, it still tied the Constitution and the Founding Father’s ideas, efforts and era directly and rightfully to the tea party movement. Plus, why cowtow to the liberal media anyway?

Anyway, this story just reminded me of all that. Beck does seem to be all over the map. He embraces theatricality for himself at times, but disapproves it elsewhere.

Beck joined a cult that will make him the God of his own planet, he should just wait for that and put off his attempts to become one on this one.

Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker had Heritage USA theme park outside of Charlotte...and that went under soon after Jim had his fling and the Feds started investigating Bakker’s rip off schemes

Interestingly, Bakker is back on Christian TV with a new show from Branson, MO....and hawks a lot of “two year supply of food” packages....a la the Mormon Church and survivalists

I don’t have the impression from watching these videos that Beck is proposing a theme park or any entertainment venue at all. He wants to build a freestanding city. Part of it echoes developments like Kentlands in the Washington DC suburbs and Celebration in Georgia, which means local vernacular architecture, front porches so that people can sit out on them and wave to each other, and alleys behind the houses so that trash removal isn’t out on the street. He suggests also like these developments that offices and businesses be within walking distance of the home and that farms should exist in the nearby countryide.

OK, this is not bad, though as the occupants of these new urbanist developments have found, they soon get too big for people to be able to walk anywhere, and we’re back to cars and traffic. Having farms right next to urban areas isn’t too practical either, because the suburbanites don’t like the noises and smells of agricultural production. (Beck admits that he’s scared of cattle.)

What does sound nice is his advocacy of programs of apprenticeship for young people who want to learn useful trades. This is a GOOD idea. We need to stop sending the nonscholarly adult “kids” to expensive nurseries in which they spend four years drinking. This is a stupid waste of time and money. They can drink without spending $50K a year. They should learn a trade so that they can support themselves and a wife and children.

It’s a great idea. The minute a street has to be built or garbage has to be removed or ore than one person has to decide on something it becomes a goverrnment.

Then there has to he votes. Soon agendas appear. Oops, need a prison.

No thanks.

There was a time when Beck was on Fox that I used to watch him every day. This might be a good idea, but like anything, it’s in the implementation of it where that’s to be judged. Beck’s been too erratic for me to follow lately, but I wish him well.

Anyone interested in this kind of idea should look up Orania, South Africa.

Yep, as soon as you have to do somethig that private enterprise can’t manage—building an air force, for instance—there is government. (I don’t agree that removing garbage is a necessary function of government.) Unless you move to a wilderness area and become entirely self-sufficient, you are going to encounter government in some way. However, I’d rather have a government elected from candidates who share my values than the borderline commie-professional victim-exploitative totalitarians who govern me now.

Or, Beck is going to be the next Warren Jeffs or L. Ron Hubbard. I wonder how long he will remain with the LDS? I can’t see him staying and being subservient for long. Beck’s ego is growing faster than the national debt.
