Police in one Atlanta community are taking extraordinary measures to deal with heightened rates of violent crime – the unleashing of armored vehicles capable of withstanding bullets fired from AK-47s.

Originally reported by WSB Atlanta, police are using an armored vehicle normally used by SWAT teams to battle a series of burglaries and home invasions in a south Fulton County neighborhood.

What heightened rates? The rates of violent crimes and murders have fallen steadily for years. There's nothing going on in crime statistics that comes anywhere close to warranting the ongoing militarization of domestic law enforcement - drone surveillance, surveillance cameras in public areas, equipment enabling police to obtain thermal images inside private homes, armored vehicles - made for use by the US military against enemy combatants, now being used by police departments on US civilians.

SWAT needs an array of special equipment, teams of manpower and armored vehicles to battle burglars and home invaders and the people in the same neighborhood don't need anything but a handgun with no more than 10 rounds

Once cops would have known they needed to stop the criminals rather than simply get into an arms war with them.

>> How about 12 ga. slugs from about 5 feet?

How about an IED? I’d also imagine that it gets rather hot inside that coffin with a robust diesel fire underneath.

Doesn’t do much good to have an armored vehicle if the guys are hanging off the sides like big slabs of meat targets.

I bet some precision fire directed at those gun port would have hot lead bouncing around the inside pretty well...

A lot of the folks i know who’ve come back from Iraq and Afghanistan picked up a few tricks as well for dealing with light armor...

Just sayin’....

At about 30 sec. in on this short video is a “promo” of one of these types of vehicles. Don’t forget the gas masks.

I only mentioned the 12 ga. slug as a sarcastic remark to the comment in the article regarding "stopping an AK-47"......aka, the most over publicized and demonized evil firearm in existence today.

As a side note, there was a report on this morning's news here in S.E. Michigan about a shooting at a police station in Inkster which of course involved an "assault weapon".......no further information was available at that time.........

If you have some crazies in a meth house shooting at the neighbors, then, yes, protect your police officers going in to root them out. If you need an armored vehicle to patrol the streets, then you have lost control. Issue “Shoot to kill!” orders until civilization returns. Just because some people are willing to tolerate thugs doesn’t mean the rest of the population has to suffer.

” wouldn’t go into those areas WITHOUT an armored vehicle. So I have some sympathy here.”

No kidding. I wouldn’t go down to South Fulton unless it was in an Abrams tank. :)
