White House rejects debt-ceiling move
The Washington Times ^ | January 12, 2013 | Dave Boyer

The White House flatly rejected Saturday the proposal for President Obama to bypass Congress in raising the nation’s borrowing limit, a day after the Senate’s top Democrats urged Mr. Obama to take that step.

“There are only two options to deal with the debt limit: Congress can pay its bills, or it can fail to act and put the nation into default,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said in a statement. “Congress needs to do its job.”

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Nevada Democrat, and other Democratic lawmakers wrote to Mr. Obama Friday urging that the president perform an end-run around Congress on the debt ceiling.

“We believe you must be willing to take any lawful steps to ensure that America does not break its promises and trigger a global economic crisis — without Congressional approval, if necessary,” the four top Democrats in the Senate wrote.

But Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the top Republican in the chamber, said abdicating their authority to the White House amounted to “the Democratic leadership hiding under their desks.”

Very clever. First 0bamugabe asks Congress for permission to set the debt limit himself. Naturally they laugh in his face. Then “Dirty” Harry ‘suggests’ that 0bamugabe just break the law and set debt limits anyway. 0bamugabe pretends to be honorable and rejects Reid’s phony recommendation. Now he and the Dems will claim they have done all that they can do and it’s the Republicans obstructing ‘progress’ on ‘debt negotiations.’

One advantage of being an Independent is that I'm not beholden to the decisions made by the Republicans or Democrats, or their toadies. Instead, I can take a fresh stab at the problem.

First, the biggest problem is that the people responsible for creating the budget of the United States haven't done so. The folks in the House tried, and the result went nowhere. The folks in the Senate haven't done anything that I've seen. As far as the White Hut, the last budget to come out of there was laughed off the prairie by the Democrats.

So how have we been paying the bills? Continuing Resolutions. The stopgap method for making spending money legal.

So, a solution suggests itself. Don't use the existing model for the Continuing Resolutions. Instead, pass Continuing Resolutions that conform to the last legally adopted budget of the United States. Authorize spending to that budget, and no more. No "kickers", no "adjustments." Follow the letter of the numbers. Want more money for a program? Adopt a budget that includes that money.

Money bills originate in the House. There is your starting point.

Hate to rain on your parade but can you imagine what will happen when the products of LBJ's "Great Society" don't get their checks, Section 8 vouchers, EBT cards, etc.

Cities will burn and people will be robbed and killed for money, vengeance and sport.

We are in too deep to do anything but ride it to the revolution.

Require an approved budget before any debt ceiling increase.

The pubs can put out a budget instantly. Wait for the Senate to do its job.

Then debate a budget like we normally [pre0bama] did. Then move the debt ceiling as per the needs of the new budget.

Someone needs to explain to Obama how this works. We will not default unless Treasury refuses to write the checks. The us.gov takes in money EVERY day! Prioritize!

The deficit will be paid of in 6 or 7 years. Give people a 3 or 4 year tax holiday from all forms of federal taxation after that.

Since the dims/rats/progressives slavishly follow the communist line.....

make the tax same as in Russia...

flat 13% and no deductions....

Tax form consists of a postcard size form ...

With a place for name, address, and total income...

put in envelope with a check for 13% and mail to the tax office.

Iwas watching an old movie and this rich family was in default, so out came the gavels and they had to sell off everything that could be sold to PAY OFF THEIR DEBT - now I’m not saying America needs to have a FIRE SALE on assets but there is NO TALK about ACTUALLY CUTTING THE FUNDS OFF. I hope the gov’t goes into shutdown mode because frankly they have been broken for so long.

Agreed. Those very cities are populated with “low information voters” and libtards. Burn it ALL the way down.

Under Reagan, the government was shut down five-or-six times.

there is no debt ceiling. we went over that number, $16.4 trillion, on dec 31st

the current national debt is: $16.441 trillion

they have no intention of staying within the fiscal constraints put forth by congress. expect he dollar to continue to slide as the few countries buying our debt back away... leaving only the federal reserve to buy it... having bought 75% of our debt last year... leading us inevitably into the Weimar republic

if anyone complains about high prices or unemployment... just tell them to “enjoy the, baby!” as we have “four more years... four more years!”

never let it be forgotten who brought us here, how, and why

Obama keeps saying the nation has to pay for its past obligations. I agree. Let’s hold the line starting today. Match revenue to expenses. No more need to raise the debt ceiling. If there isn’t enough revenue, cut expenses instead of borrowing more.

In other words Mr. Obama, the need to raise the debt ceiling has everything to do with future deficit spending, not past.

Why can’t Boehner and McConnell say this to him?
