SEATTLE (AP) -- Turn in a handgun in Seattle and pick up a $100 gift card for online shopping at Amazon.com.

-snip-

Amazon is kicking in $30,000 to start the program and the Seattle Police Foundation is adding $25,000. Pemco and other businesses also are contributing to push the total over $70,000.

-snip-

Handguns, rifles and shotguns are worth a $100 gift card. Guns classified as assault weapons are worth $200.

Participants need not worry about being accused. Police say they won't take photos or record license plates. No ballistics tests will be conducted on the weapons.

Either this paragraph is a lie, or the Amazon and the Seattle PD are helping local thugs fence their loot and destroy evidence.

Use a gun in a crime, get $100 to have the evidence destroyed.

There’s nothing wrong with folk selling old broken and rusted junk guns to Amazon/Seattle. Aside from the minor hit the taxpayers take, and I suspect the pension and medical plans for Seattle’s public employees is the more vicious rip-off there.

It’s sad if widows are dumb enough to turn in historic or heritage weapons, but those items are theirs after all. (Although I’d hate to see a rare $600,000 16th Century katana get destroyed...)

No criminal in his right mind (OK quite a few are not so right) would turn a $1200 pistol in for only $100 when he could get $600 for it on the ‘street’. $600 buys a lot more drugs or whatever else than $100.

Plus, this sort of trap, if it’s a trap, will only catch the stupid, and frankly we don’t want stupid people having firearms. Do we?

So, for certain, the Seattle police could be ‘trusted’ to at least not check serial numbers against their records of stolen firearms?

They might not go to the trouble of doing finger-print and ballistics checking of any weapons apparently safe to fire, but if I were in that department, I sure would. Any fingerprints on magazines or rounds could be vital evidence.

And if I got matches, even if I didn’t have names from the buy program itself, those fingerprints and those weapons would get into the evidence boxes for any associated crimes.

I can’t figure out why someone with a bit of money(and maybe some sponsors) does not put out the word that they will give $150.00 per gun. They can then resell them. And no one will sell there guns to the state.

I’ve got 2 junk pistols I would love to trade for $100 Amazon gift cards, that I could immediately use on Amazon.com to purchase accessories for my AR-15.

Win win if you ask me!

They want my AR the price is one billion US dollars, payable in advance to the numbered off shore account of my choice. Nah, never mind. My 2nd Amendment rights aren’t for sale.

Someone is buying them back at a fair price.

Look here http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_1_5/1420593_Gun_buy_back_AAR__an_amazing_success_.html

The gun buyback was an amazing success! We saved 21 guns from being destroyed! We ended up spending a total of $3k, which comes out to an average of $140 per gun. And here are the pics as promised.

We set up a table right in front of the police station. The police did not hassle us at all and just asked that we be on the sidewalk instead of on police property.

Police say they won't take photos or record license plates. No ballistics tests will be conducted on the weapons.

But they'll run serial numbers and return stolen weapons to rightful owners, correct?

In most instances the Buy Backs get guns nobody wants or would ever spend $100. on. I have a crappy old hand gun I couldn’t sell on a bet. I am waiting for a $100 or more buy back to get some money out of it.

Plus Amazon quit selling drugs online, so he's up a creek anyway.

In further local news, the crowd at the Washington Arms Collectors gun show in Monroe today was enormous! As one might guess, “assault rifles” were going for at least four times the Seattle Buy-Back price, and most ammo was marked up a bit as well, but my impression was that most people there were just “topping off the tank” so to speak with some finishing touches to their long-term preparations. No panic buying at all.

As usual, it was a polite, well-mannered crowd, and friendly, honest, law-abiding merchants. Made me proud to be a part of it.

Sometimes I think that 0bama is a trick dreamed up by the gun industry to increase sales.
