Primitive N.C. retreat a bit too primitive for Watauga officials

Watauga County mountain man Eustace Conway’s passion for teaching primitive living came to a sudden halt in October when local government officials shut down his operation, citing safety and health concerns.

After receiving a tip that Conway had built structures without a permit, Watauga County Planning and Inspections Director Joe Furman obtained an administrative search warrant to inspect the roughly two dozen buildings and structures at Turtle Island Preserve, Conway’s 500-plus acre retreat in the mountains east of Boone.

In September, Furman assembled a team of building inspectors, health department officials, a tax assessor, and sheriff’s deputies, who made a surprise visit to the site. Conway refers to the inspection as a “raid.”

The following month, local officials ordered Conway to stop hosting visitors and interns at Turtle Island Preserve until he obtains several permits.

This was NOT his own land-

The government doesn’t tolerate people who refuse to be under its control. Live in the woods without paying taxes or getting government handouts is something that bureaucrats can’t stand.

Eustace charges $95 dollars for ‘spoon carving lessons’ which I’m sure his lackeys happily fork over to him in order to ‘learn how to carve’ a spoon-lol

That’s one of the worse- apparwently the law down htere can’t find moonshin ers, bvut camera crews have no problem doing so? And hwo in their right mind is goign to be braggign about their illegal activities to the world by sahwoing them their suppsoed illegal activities on national TV? I’d think by now the law woudl realize that the large number of camera crew ‘hiding i n the brush beside the road as the police drive merrily by without a clue as to where tyhsoe sneaky shienrs were’, and drivign by the myriad of A&E vehicvles (or whatever channel is filming htem) meant that maybe, just maybe, the ‘moonshiners’ were close by- but apaprently they don’t because those wassally shienrs are just too slick for them

I just don’t get it- tbhe camera peopel evidently are very ‘lucky camera operators to always be in just the right places and at just the right angles to catch all the ‘developing action’ as it ‘spontaniously plays out’ before them

On you tube they hsoudl the supposed ‘fight’ between scott and captain vern o nthe gold show when they were in the bar together- watchign the video at normal speed you woudl swear that scott (the brute that he ‘is’) broke the glass in Vern’s face, you coudl hear the glass break- but I recorded the show at home, and went htrough the whole scene frame by frame, and the glass never broke— nor did it hit vern’s face, and none of the punches thrown during hte ‘fight’ connected with either man- I mentioend the dubbed in sound (without mentioning that I watched frame by frame and discovered that hte glass did NOT break) and the fact that noone made contact during hte punches, and someoen on yuotube- presumably someoen connectec with hte show, swore up and down they do ‘not dub in sounds’ and that the fight was ‘spontanious and real’ (or soemthign to that fact- I then explained to them what they just said waS BS and that anyoen coudl watch frame by frame and clearly see that what they said was BS

These fake drama shows are gettign tiring- the thing is, these shows could stand on their own without all the feaux paw (sp?) drama added in and sound effects poorly dubbed in-
Even hte repo show with lou and sonia there was a suppsoed ‘real fight’ and I again watched it frame by frame, saw lou compeltely miss the person when he punched, but heard a punch smack sound nonetheless-

And hardcore pawn- what a joke- apaprently every third person in chicago is an exhibitionist who never gets arrested by the law for exposing htemselves in public-
