400-pound woman who plunged through UES sidewalk says size saved her life (NYC)

Size does matter!

The 400-pound Queens pedestrian who crashed through an Upper East Side sidewalk said yesterday that a thinner woman might have died from that fall.

“Thank God, they said that my size was the only thing that saved me,” Ulanda Williams, 32, told The Post as she was discharged from NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital.

Williams, of Springfield Gardens, was waiting for a bus at about 9:10 p.m. Friday when she tried to hide from the rain under an awning.

The ground suddenly disappeared beneath her — and she was swallowed whole by the cavernous space adjacent to the cellar of The Blue Room on Second Avenue.

“It was horrible, absolutely horrible,” said Williams, who broke her arm in two places in the 6-foot fall.

Being 6 foot under should be taken as a sign by a 400 lb woman.

After looking at her, the 400 is way more believable.

Sort of. Grates and sidewalks are always collapsing in NYC. When I saw the initial report a couple of days ago, I actually did think that she was lucky because she was probably cushioned by her size.

The building is owned by a first class slumlord; the sidewalk door (which opens onto stairs to the basement for bringing supplies into the restaurant or business above it) evidently was just hanging by a hinge and the “sidewalk” at that point was literally an unsupported inch and a half of cement, cracked where it joined the building.

The owner lives in Jersey and was probably a friend of the late Vinnie the Chin, John Gambino and a host of others. They’re not big on building maintenance and they own a lot of property in that area.

Problem with that song is that the Bible says he took a rib, not a pile of clay.

Thank you

I’ve been waiting to see a picture.

90+% of the population had nothing to fear. Most of the population being 1/2 that weight.

A thinner woman wouldn’t have gone through the sidwalk in the first place.

Then she'd have no reason to thank "divine intervention" for her rescue.

The 400 pounds is even more believable when you realize she’s 6’5” tall according to the story.

the article stated that a thinner person might have been killed in the fall.....is it possible that a thinner person might not have collapsed the sidewalk???

why is it hollow under the freaking sidewalk?

that's not even a little bit unusual, there is a lot of space there and adjacent buildings are usually free to take advantage of it.....with restrictions of course
