Obama: ‘We need more revenue’ (a.k.a. tax increases)
Washington comPost ^ | January 14, 2013 | Felicia Sonmez

President Obama kicked off the final news conference of his first term by renewing his call for Congress to approve a “balanced” deficit-reduction package that includes both spending cuts and new revenues.

Republican leaders have said repeatedly that the Jan. 1 fiscal cliff agreement ended any discussion of raising new revenue and that in upcoming negotiations they would deal only in spending cuts. Obama made clear that he does not agree.

He reiterated that he is “open to making modest adjustments to programs like Medicare.”

“The fact is, though, we can’t finish the job of deficit reduction through spending cuts alone,” Obama added. “We need more revenue.”

[Snip]

“The debt ceiling is not a question of authorizing more spending,” Obama said. “Raising the debt ceiling does not authorize more spending. it simply allows the country to pay for spending that Congress has already agreed to.”

It's George Bush's fault that we had to spend all that money on pork in all 57 states!

Raise the limit on a credit card so you can get cash advances to pay the monthly minimum. Don’t worry about it because you also played the Lottery today and your financial plan is to hit the jackpot.
This is sarcasm and not an actual financial plan. I got a B+ in Accounting 101 which is not taught to Poli-Sci Students at Columbia.

I listened for about two minutes and then turned him off. This is just his regular campaign speech about how we need more revenues and balanced approach to governing where the rich pay their fair share so that we can invest in our future. I.e education, energy, infrastructure, etc.

He said the GOP has a choice to either pony up a raise in the debt ceiling or cause a default, a credit downgrade, and probably a world crisis. This guy makes me sick. I can't stand to listen to him.

Fact is Boehner already went to Walmart and bought a case of tissues. The RINOS sold out America. I know this because Obama is confident he will get everything he is asking for.

Be sure to give yourself some credit because you have cut your cookie budget in 2020 and beyond so everything is solved.

This isn’t just Obama, although he is one of the worst offenders. We would not be in this situation if a lot of Americans didn’t want a bunch of free stuff paid for by someone else. Americans have been conditioned by 80 years of the Welfare State to believe that they can get all kinds of spending on “education” and “children” and “infrastructure” and helping the “needy” and the “elderly” and having the “rich” pay for it.

***IF*** Boehner is true to his word, he won’t negotiate anymore. The House should pass a budget plan that will balance the budget without raising debt ceiling, send it to the Senate and then sit and do nothing until the Senate acts. Then go to conference. If the government has to shut down, so be it.

“....can’t ‘ finish ‘ the job of deficit reduction with spending cuts alone “.

Hells bells there ARE no spending cuts! We may lower increases but have cut nothing. Obviously the Republicans will cut nothing either. They are lost in Alinsky, busy in other issues and match races to amnesty, grousing whether it be for a few, a LOT, or for ALL illegals.

So raising the debt ceiling has nothing to do with spending?
So if my credit limit on my credit card is reached while I am at the store trying to buy a big screen tv,I call the bank and say I have reached my 10 thousand dollar limit, they won’t let me buy this television, the bank tells the store clerk let him have the tv,buying it has nothing to do with spending

So where is the approved budget that outlines the agreed upon spending?

There is a difference between reconciliation bills and credit limit Obama’s statement also indicates he sees spending and borrowing as the same thing. That means he thinks 100% spending is borrowed. That is an inteesting statement by itself.

President Obama said that the debt ceiling needs to be raised so that we could pay the bills for monies already spent, and he made this point very clearly: We don’t
want to raise the debt ceiling so we can spend more money. This is very confusing to me. If I understand this corrctly, you have a debt ceiling limit but you spend money beyond that limit so you ask for the debt ceiling to be raised. The part I don’t understand is, what
prevents the government from continuing to do the same thing over and over again, in which case why have a debt ceiling at all? The whole thing sounds like jibber jabber to me. Why doesn’t anyone call him on this obvious and deliberate attempt to Bull shit the uninformed?
