For six years, legislator Lindsey Holmes has represented West Anchorage as a Democrat. But as of Saturday afternoon, shes a Republican.
The announcement that Holmes had switched parties came after a two-hour caucus meeting, where members of the House Majority hashed out what the change meant and occasionally tuned into the NFL playoffs. It was unexpected, and Holmes thinks shell get a wide range of responses from her district.
Its going to come as a great surprise to some people, Holmes said. I think other people will not be as surprised. I think some people will have sort of seen this coming. I believe theres going to be a mix of opinions, but Im happy to talk to everybody. I represent everybody in my district regardless.
Holmes represents parts of Spenard and Sand Lake, and she won her race as a Democrat with a respectable 55 percent of the vote. But she received over 70 percent of the vote in 2010, before taking on part of Republican Mia Costellos old district this year.
Holmes said that she decided to become a Republican because of her positions on business and energy issues, including the construction of an in-state gasline. House Majority Leader Lance Pruitt said that is part of why the caucus was eager to welcome her.
Her views on economic development over the past few years seem to be fairly in line with the majority of our caucus, Pruitt said.
As part of the majority, Holmes is now in a stronger position to promote her economic policy, especially since switching parties means she gets assigned to the House Finance Committee, which has considerable control over the states budget.
Holmes spot on the finance committee comes at the expense of Democrats, who will have give up one of their three coveted seats. Additionally, her decision to change parties means that Republicans now have a 75-percent majority in the House and that they could have an easier time blocking holds on bills.
Even so, Democratic Minority Leader Beth Kerttula doesnt expect Holmes departure to affect her caucus too much.
Its not so much the numbers. Its the hard work, Kerttula said. Its the keeping focused. Its the working across the aisle. And its also keeping your eye on whats good for Alaskans.
Kerttula said she is focusing on what her four new freshman can do for her caucus instead of dwelling on Holmes decision to defect. She said that the minority should be reorganized by the opening of the legislative session on Tuesday.
Kerttula said that she is still willing to hear Holmes ideas if they are in line with Democrats goals.
Were going to be working with her as well as everyone else to do whats right by Alaska, Kerttula said.
Holmes is the first legislator to switch parties since 1998, when Sen. Jerry Mackie left the Democrats to join a Republican Majority.
Let’s hope she makes herself a good conservative Republican!
An opportunist. Let’s se her pic
Actually, if I were a Democrat or part of the old boys network that put Lisa Murkowski back in as a Senator I'd be working over the Democrat structure and positions 24/7 'cause that just ain't right ~ at least not if they want to stay in business.
That’s why I firmly believe progressos ruling right now have no legitimacy and no mandate. They DID NOT win as much as they mastered the art of thievery.
Give them another year or so and the pace of defections will accelerate as steadily as it did in the run up to and in aftermath of 2010 elections.
The Republicans should be moving to the Democrat party.

Don’t write her off so fast. Ronald Reagan was once a Democrat, too.
Mia Costello, Mike Chenault, Beth Kerttula, Lindsey Holmes and Anna Fairclough ~ name order. Chenault is taller than the others but Anna looks kinda fat too. Must be those 7,000 calorie per day Alaskan diets or something.
Ronald Reagan won his first political office as a Republican. This old gal is part of the party faithful. At best she’s an authentic RINO. We really don’t want to run her for President though ~ don’t want Romney either.
does she know how to re-arrange deck chairs?
What’s the difference?
The Democrats want to abolish The Constitution immediately, the Republicans are willing to put it off a couple of weeks.
Whether she is needed or not in the GOP, it is certainly worth the chuckles to watch the leftist heads explode in the comments section at the Anchorage Daily Worker. Remember, their mantra is that if an R switches parties, it means she has “grown.” Go see what vileness they label a D when she switches. Truly revealing.
The Republicans should be moving to the Democrat party.
we need to start running Conservative “Democrats” in the primaries against these wackadoodle DIMS, we could replace a lot of them in the primary and once you have a “DINO” to run against run a VERY conservative Repub against them. Either way it will be win-win...
This is the exact same strategy the Dims have used inthe last 40 years and it is very effective.
There WAS a time when the Republicans were on the ASCENDANCY. I still remember Phil Gramm and Ben Whitehorse Campbell switching....
The Republicans STOOD PROUDLY for smaller government.
Let’s see those days again. Now.
That nonsense won’t work, there are not enough conservative Republican primary voters to go around.
Pass. Send her back.
Not so fast, Mr. High standards...
