Full Title: Chicago pays $22.5 MILLION to woman who was gang raped and plummeted from seventh story window after police failed to take proper care of her

The city of Chicago agreed today to pay a record $22.5 million to a woman who was released from police custody in 2006 and instead of being taken to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation, she was released into a high crime area where she was gang raped and plummeted seven stories.

Christina Eilman, was 21-years-old when the crime occurred and she suffered permanent brain damage from the fall and has needed constant medical care ever since.

Eilman, who is bipolar, was taken into police custody at Midway Airport after suffering a mental breakdown on her flight from California.

Rather than bring Eilman to a hospital, police released her after 29 hours in custody, despite her parents calling at least nine times to warn them about her mental health status and that she was having an episode.

Police later testified at a deposition hearing that she was visibly agitated and should have been taken to the hospital. Witnesses said she was throwing herself against the bars in her jail cell.

The Chicago Sun-Times has an article about the same subject but of course there are no pictures.

It seems we have to rely on the British press to show pictures that are politically incorrect.

If I were the judge, I would allow a lawsuit that allows the family to sue each and every cop in this case, for making individual decisions that contributed to this situation. Cops should not be allowed to hide behind their badges for the decisions they make as individuals.

Commonsense says that this woman would not have had the capacity to deal with whatever might come in Chicago, even if she wasn’t bi-polar.

If Obama had a son he'd probably look like the cop who let the the girl out on the Southside to be raped and brutalized. We know this much - the Chicago newspapers will not cover a racial situation that doesn't fit their PC bullshit...

Actually the Chicago Sun-Times did cover it. The link is located in the first reply. This is from the Sun-Times article:

In the federal appeals court ruling that turned about to be the death knell of the city’s case, Chief Judge Frank Easterbrook did not mince his words in talking about the cavalier disregard that Chicago Police officers exhibited for Eilman’s safety before her release. “She was lost, unable to appreciate her danger and dressed in a manner to attract attention,” Easterbrook wrote last spring. “She is white and well-off while the local population is predominantly black and not affluent, causing her to stand out as a person unfamiliar with the environment and, thus, a potential target for crime.”

Now if her parents had not been well off and not able to afford to raise a stink would we have heard about this? Of course there are no pictures at the Sun-Times. The British press has to take care of that.

I love the careful way they worded this, as if "crime" just springs out of the shadows all on its lonesome to attack people. Also, when did it become PC to mention the way a rape victim is dressed? Probably about the same time the left guffawed at Sandra Bernhard calling for her "black brothers" to gang-rape Sarah Palin if she ever went to NYC.

I hate to call it special justice but I get your point. If she had been blond and poor or black and poor we may not have heard about his.

I believe this should apply to anyone who is a victim of crime after attending any event at the Prudential Center in Newark NJ; burying crime stats to draw unsuspecting victims into this little Zimbabwe is irresponsible and reckless. Living along the frontier of the Newark Wildlife Preserve, we know better; wealthier people living further out west believe the nonsense spouted about “Newark coming back” (and pay for it).

“Rather than bring Eilman to a hospital, police released her after 29 hours in custody, ...”

Did the gang rape happen in the Ghetto, or was she just taken to the ghetto and thrown out the window ?

Interesting that a story about Chicago comes from a BRITISH News Site.

$22+ million, less 40% & costs to her trial attorneys, repayment of her medical bills & care, set up a trust for payment of future SSDI & Medicare - which leaves her a few million to live on with her disabilities. Not really the jackpot it may sound like.

This is another good story about how we really need to overhaul the way we deal with mentally ill people.

I suppose the cops thinking went along these lines: after reviewing the situation we’ve decided this woman didn’t commit any crime. So we’re not going to charge her, we’re just going to let her leave. Even though her parents have contacted us and told us she’s ill there’s really nothing we can do about that. We don’t have the right to keep someone incarcerated just because they are mentally unstable.

THESE are the laws that need to be changed.
