‘Twas the Friday before Christmas, and while most Americans were enjoying time with family and friends, the bureaucrats at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) were stirring quietly about, preparing to release its long-overdue evaluation of the Head Start program.

Head Start is an $8 billion per year federal preschool program, designed to improve the kindergarten readiness of low-income children. Since its inception in1965, taxpayers have spent more than $180 billion on the program.

[snip]

The first-grade evaluation found that any benefits the children may have accrued while in the Head Start program had dissipated by the time they reached first grade.

A prove totally worthless program yet the politicians keep on funding it.

Several years ago Tennessee hired an independent company to evaluate the Head Start program here. They got the same results.

From what I understand, the “teachers” are often mothers of the Head Start participants!

I remember reading a report at least 10 years ago that came to the exact same conclusion.

My mother worked for head start for the first 20 years. She says its nothing but social engineering and a money grabbing scam.

It is a government funded babysitting service, nothing more.

I could not get my kids in head start..

you see, I am a taxpayer, not a taxtaker...

a useless waste of a babysitting program...

after all, welfare recipients need a break from raising kids too...

Head Start, Pre-K and Kindergarten are all socialist inspired means to start indoctrination as early as possible.
I never went to any of them. I started in the First Grade, as did most people of my generation.
It wasn’t until the socialists got into the education system and saw an opportunity for early indoctrination that these programs came about.

Me too. Never saw the inside of a school until the first grade. The “educators” can’t wait to get their hooks into the kiddies so the are set in the wrong direction from an early age.

That is correct. Head Start was set up as a jobs program for otherwise unemployable minority women. It never was about children's education, as the studies have consistently shown for years now. None of this is new, or a surprise.

“totally worthless program yet the politicians keep on funding it.”

The writer, P.J. O’Rourke, once wrote that government failure is “underfunded.” And Ronald Reagan said that the closest thing to eternal life on earth is a government program

All so-called early childhood education is free babysitting. Children are better off learning in the home, if not for their entire childhood, at least for the first 8 to 10 years of their lives. Preschool accomplishes nothing but teaching kids how to pick up the worst germs and bad habits from other preschoolers.

See Raymond Moore’s books, School Can Wait and Better Late Than Early.

Sorry, but the head start director in our area made about $11.63 an hour. And you had to have a college degree. In urban areas it may be pay more, but not here. And I know this because I was one
