Obama Unveils Biggest Gun-Control Push in Decades

President Barack Obama proposed a new assault weapons ban and mandatory background checks for all gun buyers on Wednesday as he tried to channel national outrage over the Newtown school massacre into the biggest U.S. gun-control push in decades.

Rolling out a wide-ranging plan for executive and legislative action to curb gun violence, Obama set up a fierce clash with the powerful U.S. gun lobby and its supporters in Congress, who will resist what they see as an encroachment on constitutionally protected gun rights.

Obama presented his agenda at a White House event in front of an audience that included relatives of some of the 20 first-graders who were killed along with six adults by a gunman on December 14 at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut.

"We can't put this off any longer," Obama said, vowing to use "whatever weight this office holds" to make his proposals reality. "Congress must act soon."

Until now, Obama had done little to rein in America's gun culture during his first four years in office. But just days before his second inauguration, he appears determined to champion gun control in his next term with a concerted drive for tighter laws and other steps aimed at preventing new tragedies like the one at Newtown.

The proposals stem from a month-long review led by Vice President Joe Biden, who on orders from Obama met with advocates on both sides, including representatives from the weapons and entertainment industries.

Obama's plan calls on Congress to renew a prohibition on assault weapons sales that expired in 2004, a requirement for criminal background checks on all gun purchases, including closing a loophole for gun show sales, and a new federal gun trafficking law - long sought by big-city mayors to keep out-of-state guns off their streets.

Reuters stated this:

"The Newtown gunman, 20-year-old Adam Lanza, used a Bushmaster AR-15 type assault rifle to shoot his victims, many of them 6- and 7-year-olds, before killing himself."

Unless I am mistaken, I thought he never used the AR-15 as it was in his car's trunk and he only shot his pistols.

What do you do? What do you tell your doctor?!

Step 1: meet with your lawyer and set up a gun trust (either title 1 or title 2 NFA)

2: put all of your firearms on a schedule A or B within the trust.

3: When doc or any agent of the state ask if you own guns, legally and ethically you can say, "My wife and I do not personally own firearms". ( because the property is a separate trust asset)

Reuters trying to make Dear Leader seem tough.

But the Obama EO's didn't address these points.

Reuters is trying to make the Obama initiatives seem tough when really all he's doing is saying "Congress, please pass this."

Even Reid says he's not passing an assault weapons ban.

I have to ask. Did Obama go cornball on the control issue? I mean judging by his 23 mishmash points (and $500 million!) I have to ask if Obam is really down with the cause?

Most Americans didn’t have a problem with FDR doing that then. I wonder if Americans will care when the ‘new FDR’ does it.

I think Obama and the dems got spooked with 3 to 4 million gun sales in the last 60 days, most of them ARs. Woopsie!

I wonder how many ex slaves would have liked owning firearm protection back in the day before they were sold into slavery. Maybe some background checked journalist could ask some of their descendants what great great great great great grandpa would say. Or maybe Hillary could hold a seance and ask.

He sees the numbers on the thousands killed in the inner cities. He has been president long enough to see the numbers. He has not done anything to take guns from violent criminals, so the obvious conclusion is that he wants violent criminals to keep their guns, and non-violent citizens to turn them in.

The American people are not going to do anything to stop this or other attacks on the constitution of the US. We are just going to go along with it quietly until the cops and the National Guard show up at our doors to confiscate our weapons. Then Obama and the rest of the communist loving cronies can do whatever they want.

If only he had gone for gun control instead of Obamacare in his first term, we would not be putting up with a second term.

From the FoxNews website “If there’s even one life that can be saved, then we’ve got an obligation to try,” Obama said.

Really? If just one life can be saved shouldn’t there be armed police officers in EVERY school? After all, there are ELEVEN assigned to your daughters’ school.

Truth is that not many doctors want to be in the business of gathering information for the government.

Why should gun buyers have to undergo a background check when this POTUS never had one?

Hey you GOPhers, break your silence on this subject and say something about it.

Until I hear from you, don’t bother me with your requests for donations.

.
Any parents who agree that the lives of Obama’s children are more important and valuable than the lives of theirs should not be a parent.

Have you seen the NRA ad yet?

It was fun listening to the LSN calling the NRA ad a *personal* attack on the Hussein.

Yep, in today’s brave new world, things that aren’t illegal *yet* are just another “loophole” to be closed until we’re all criminals.

Why, just last year I was ticketed for doing 74 in a 70mph zone, but lots of other drivers used what I now call the “Interstate loophole” to avoid a ticket like mine. These folks skirted the law by driving 69mph, while the police stood by, completely powerless to stop them!
