Most unfortunately, INVAR, the first lesson history teaches is that very few people ever learn the obvious lessons of history. If we're at all wise, we'll at least learn those you've pointed out in your post.

That's very well said! I certainly don't mean to excuse the jihadis in any way, shape, or form, but must say their hatred is understandable to a certain degree: they're poorly educated lifelong followers of a deeply entrenched anti-religion that commands loyalty from a billion naive people.
The at least equally hateful and most probably still more hateful self-styled "progressives" have neither reason to hate us nor anything even remotely like an excuse. We've never done anything to harm them. We've never held ourselves above them. The vast majority of us are neither more nor less wealthy than the vast majority of them. We've never announced we plan to reduce them to state serfdom. We're ordinary American citizens, yet they regard us as mortal enemies to be vanquished and enslaved.

I fear you've hit the nail squarely on the head. All at once, I doubt enslavement will be enough for the "progressives." I fear only literally murdering millions of us will satisfy their insane blood lust.
