Sixty Percent of Young Americans Plan to Purchase Firearms, Study Reveals

Sixty percent of high school and college students say they plan on owning guns at a later stage in life, an academic study from American University revealed on Monday.

According to a brand new study, sixty percent of young Americans plan on purchasing firearms in the future.

According to the study, about 40 percent of the American students surveyed said they definitely planned to own firearms once they had established their own households. Another 20 percent said they were “contemplating” owning guns.

Those findings were part of a broader study conducted by American University professor Jennifer L. Lawless and Loyola Marymount professor Richard L. Fox which focused on the political opinions of young Americans. The study was conducted prior the recent Newtown massacre, but after the Aurora theatre shooting.

Lawless told Campus Reform on Tuesday that in her view the findings were proof that President Obama should move swiftly, and without the permission of Congress if necessary, in order limit the availability of firearms.

“The next generation plans on owning guns, so if we want to avoid the tragedies that we’ve seen… we obviously need to move quickly and if an executive order is the way to do it, then that is the way the to do it,” she said.

Lawless said the study was not prompted by the Aurora shooting, pointing to the fact that the study focused on a broad range of political opinions among young people which included firearms.

The study indicated that there is no significant difference between the percentage of high school and college students who are considering purchasing firearms. Both polled at about 60 percent.

Students who identified as Democrats were twice as likely to fear gun violence as those who were not, the study found. Only 33 percent of the respondents who were questioned were raised in households where guns were owned.

David Burnett, the public relations director of the conservative student group Students for Concealed Carry, told Campus Reform on Tuesday he was not surprised by the study’s result.

“With every single spree killing we’ve seen in this nation in the past twenty years, with every sexual assault that takes place, nine every day on college campuses, with every robbery report we have, with every campus that goes on lockdown, these gun free zones are proven to be indefensible and impractical,” he said.

“College campuses put pictures on the door and expect psychopaths to abide by them,” he continued. “I think more and more college students have been waking up to this reality in the past five years since Virginia tech and they don’t want it.”

And even if you DON’T protect yourself, the more likely that some random honest member of the public can, the less likely some random crook will make it necessary. Sometimes active participation in the militia was obligatory, sometimes it wasn’t, but the rationale for the much maligned 2nd amendment remains true. The security of a free state depends on any honest person being allowed to defend it with arms.

No kidding! WTH believes a plotting mass shooter turns aside at the stupid picture of a gun with a red slash over it? Come on - really, people? When has that ever happened?

Instead it creates a shooting gallery for the coward who, nine times out of ten, takes his own life as soon as a good guy with a gun of his own finally arrives to the scene of the carnage.

0 stole the election, so I don’t think as many of the younger folks voted for him as was thought.

Glad to see those younger folks realizing the need to take charge of their own self defense.

Mental illness? Is this correlated with other phobias/fears? Inability to mature and take responsibility?

When I went to college I discreetly carried my snub nose .357. I never told anyone always made sure to keep it concealed. I will not subject myself to gun free zones. My tagline says it all “It’s better to have and not need, than to need and not have.” I don’t obey the gun free zone signs. The only place you can’t carry is Fed Buildings and Court Houses other than that you’re better off carrying. Gun Free Zones just make you a target.

The more King Obama’s cronies try to double down, the more young people like me will arm themselves. I decided to buy my first gun after Obama won the election, and now that he’s trying to disarm the country, I’m going to my first gun show this weekend to pick up something a bit more suited to home defense.

This is why they voted for Obama:

Lawless told Campus Reform on Tuesday that in her view the findings were proof that President Obama should move swiftly, and without the permission of Congress if necessary, in order limit the availability of firearms.

“The next generation plans on owning guns, so if we want to avoid the tragedies that we’ve seen… we obviously need to move quickly and if an executive order is the way to do it, then that is the way the to do it,” she said.

You have an adult woman professor educated in America calling for:

1. Dictatorship

2.Elimination of the Constitution and individual choice/thought along with it.

At the same time she shows herself unscientific and incapable of logical thought - "if we want to avoid the tragedies that we’ve seen"

Has she scientifically analyzed the Newton shootings?

What was the shooter's motive?

Why did he act? How did he get his weapons?

How common is this type of crime?

Are there alternative answers/solutions that would respect liberty and the Bill of Rights?

What is her hypothesis and has she tested it against historical fact?

Has it been peer reviewed or even publicly published?

So here's a professor utilizing the science of polling, yet unable to use science to think through the solution, let alone the problem. After a half century of this with a generation of ignoramouses being taught by a generation of ignoramous liberals who themselves were taught (indoctrinated) by ignoramous liberals what chance does America have?

"High Capacity" magazines alone don't do it for me,

I am ever offended by the media calling a 20 round magazine "high capacity". If the issue magazine for a Stoner variant rifle is 30 rounds, (same as an AK), then a 20 round magazine is Low capacity, and 30 rounds is standard. You have to go to a drum or ridiculously long stick magazine (too long to shoot prone) to get a high capacity mag.

High capacity should be determined by the standard magazines the firearm was designed for. Most of what the Left calls "High Capacity" is just standard for the firearm.

Mt. Pinatubo got mine when the pyroclastic cloud swept down the slopes during the eruption. But they were only semi-automatics not “assault weapons”.

“in another two decades one out of two Americans may be gun owners instead of one out of three.”

Where I live four out of three are gun owners now. No, that is not a typographical error.

They only believe that those things can happen when we have a Republican president. They don’t intend for that to ever happen again. They are convinced that as long as we have a mixed race Marxist who is a complete mystery man with no one knowing for sure from whence he came all will be skittles, sweet tea and marshmallow Unicorns. No one need ever worry about undue harassment from government again.

For those people, two is “high capacity.” They want us reduced to single shot deer rifles, possibly muzzle loaders, which in the next legislative cycle will become “sniper rifles” that must be banned, “for the children,” of course.

I went to school in Western MA. During the 08 election, when it was called for Obama a small group formed on the campus green chanting “Obama, Obama” and “we finally elected a N*&^%r!”

They had 200-300 feral students, compared to something like 2,800 that lived on campus. Don’t forget the libs on campus are feral, loud and obnoxious. Libertarians and conservatives tend to stay below the radar often.

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Not surprising, you are obviously a wild-eyed, far right, racist nutcase who thinks carbon dioxide is a natural component of the atmosphere, thinks the climate never changes, thinks that unborn babies should have more protection than convicted murderers and would like for all such as yourself to own at least forty seven assault shotguns with the capability of bringing down a 787 flying at forty thousand feet. You probably don’t even realize that Rush Limbaugh is the antichrist. You should learn to show some tolerance you #$%^&**(%^&*()_+|@#$%^&*()_+|@#$%^&*()_////////! Why do you think you need a four barreled assault derringer anyway?

Are you tapping my phone? lol

Seriously, the reason I doubt it is because the OWS bunch is pretty big and they're much of the same nutballs who buy the truther stuff. A portion of them might be for gun control but trust in gov is pretty thin across the board these days. If they haven't thought through the implications of gun control before they just might be now.

Never much of a one for regular college, I became one of Uncle Sam’s Misguided Children. First job after that, I was working nights in a city. You better believe I was carrying before you could get a permit for it in this state!

I’ll never forget the time my car broke down on the way home & a young city cop let me sit with him in his patrol car (front seat) while we waited for the tow driver. He didn’t ask & I didn’t offer. But my little pea shooter felt ten times larger than usual at the small of my back the whole time I was in there, LOL.

Yup. They will learn. And maybe in a few years, they'll figure it out.

Many of us started out as idealistic Democrats (speaking for myself). What the Democrat party offers and professes is compelling to a young kid. Most Americans want what is right and fair. And the Democrats use this fact to further their own agenda.

Then you learn that most of those promises are lies and that the Democrat party is exploitative and that you have been “used.” You learn the truth.

Sounds like I am bitter. I am not. But I am concerned about the many people who still believe without question. The Democrat party needs a shakeup. But this is never going to happen.
