Early last year in Williston there had been too much attention focused on the local gentlemen's clubs for any strippers to talk with me about what they earned, but apparently that's changed.
John Eligon from The New York Times just visited the North Dakota boomtown and one visiting dancer says she often earns more than $1,000 a night. That may be a conservative estimate as word last year was dancers were making two to three times that amount, but club owners were concerned with IRS attention and prohibited employees from speaking to the press.
With nearly two men for every woman, tension and opportunity often run high. Eligon tells the story of a local 22-year-old woman bar patron offered $7,000 for a few hours of nude cocktail service. The five guys making the offer just wanted to spice up their mixed martial arts viewing, anything to cut the monotony, lack of women, and long hours in the fields.

Well, working in a strip club is not a glamorous life, that’s for sure, even working behind the bar.
The two “normal” women I spoke of didn’t do it for long....a temporary cash-crunch solution. The one without kids was between jobs. Interesting person, and the reason she made as much as she did was because she was trained in ballet. Even though when I first met her, we started off on the wrong foot, but we got to be good friends after awhile. The other one was nice too, and was never a problem. Because she was a genuinely nice human being, of course, all the other gals hated her guts.
Both of subsequently moved on to well-paying, normal jobs; both finished their university education (practical degrees, too: engineering with one and a law degree for the other - she passed the Oregon State Bar) and I still keep in touch with both of them. The others I wouldn’t give a plugged nickel for.
My friends wife was a stripper. Apparently she made more money stripping than finding use for her masters in literature from Yale.
I’ve heard similar stories.
One of the women I worked with had a Bachelor’s in....(wait for it).....
Humanities. The “Would-You-Like-To-Supersize-Your-Order” degree, in other words. But at least she was making decent money stripping, enough to keep a roof over her head (as well as her useless husband) and food in the fridge.
And of course, oceans of booze. In fairness, I guess I’d be an alcoholic if I were married to her loser husband as well.

Hmmmm...You know....you’ve got a movie script there. I think everybody THINKS that a “decent” woman could put herself through school doing this and have wondered about it.....
For that kind of money, I’d take off my clothes so people could gawk. (make a great weight loss program)
I was thinking of giving it a shot but I’m afraid they’d want me to shave my legs. and pits. and chest. and back. and shoulders. and knuckles.
The money doesn’t seem worth all the trouble.
Bull shit...
Now why would club owners not want attention from the IRS in an (almost) all cash business?
