West Point center cites dangers of ‘far right’ in U.S

A West Point think tank has issued a paper warning America about “far right” groups such as the “anti-federalist” movement, which supports “civil activism, individual freedoms and self-government.”

The report issued this week by the Combating Terrorism Center at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., is titled “Challengers from the Sidelines: Understanding America’s Violent Far-Right.”

The center — part of the institution where men and women are molded into Army officers — posted the report Tuesday. It lumps limited government activists with three movements it identifies as “a racist/white supremacy movement, an anti-federalist movement and a fundamentalist movement.”

The West Point center typically focuses reports on al Qaeda and other Islamic extremists attempting to gain power in Asia, the Middle East and Africa through violence.

But its latest study turns inward and paints a broad brush of people it considers “far right.”

It says anti-federalists “espouse strong convictions regarding the federal government, believing it to be corrupt and tyrannical, with a natural tendency to intrude on individuals’ civil and constitutional rights. Finally, they support civil activism, individual freedoms, and self government. Extremists in the anti-federalist movement direct most their violence against the federal government and its proxies in law enforcement.”

I always thought believing in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights made me a good American citizen. Only recently have I heard otherwise. /sarc Where do they get some of these people from?

These are the same people who refuse to fly the American flag because they don't want of offend anyone.

To clarify: I have all the respect in the world for the people in our military at this time (well, except for a good chunk of the General Staff). That said, if this story is accurate, the good people will leave and the military will become a Chicago thugcop machine writ large. With lots of really powerful (but probably degrading) high tech weaponry. Defunding THAT would be GOOD.

(Maybe the good people in the military will do something to prevent that before retiring and/or just not re-upping, but the odds are against it IMHO.)

The left could have won the Vietnam war for the US if it only had Vietnamese gun registration and then confiscation. Johnson would have been saved!

With all due respect, civilian weaponry doesn’t match military firepower.

Civilians don’t have:

Carrier battle groups.
Stealth bombers.
Nukes.
Predator drones w/Hellfire missiles.
RPG’s.
Howitzers.
Tanks.
TOW missiles.
Apache attack helicopters.
etc., etc.

I wouldn’t count on the military siding with civilians. Some units may, but if push really came to shove, the bulk of the military will side with the government. And if that happens, and they turn full-on against the civilian population, civvies don’t stand a snowballs chance in Hell.

With all due respect, the British Army has all the hardware you list, but could not defeat a small band of its own subjects in Northern Ireland. Using the tactics pioneered by Michael Collins in the 20’s, civilians are not helpless against their government.

How sad it was written by a lowly staffer instead of an actual Congressman like Trey Radel or Steve Stockman. Maybe the esteemed Congressmen just haven't learned about this ridiculous "study" yet.

I’d really like a list of those “attacks” we allegedly initiated.
