Hunters' group dismayed by proposed Ct. gun reforms

HARTFORD -- The chief lobbyist for state hunters says there's very little he will support among the more than a dozen proposals presented by the Connecticut Conference of Municipalities.

Robert Crook, of Madison, executive director of the Coalition of Connecticut Sportsmen, attended the CCM's news conference in the Capitol complex Wednesday, then announced that the gun-control proposals would not succeed in stopping future incidents similar to the Newtown shootings.

"The problem is mental health and school security, not guns," Crook said. "The guy who had the gun, he broke, I don't know, 14, 15 laws. So he's a criminal. So why are they trying to penalize a legitimate citizen in the state with the fifth-best rated gun laws in the nation and impact upon hunters, target shooters, self-protection advocates? I don't understand. We're going in the wrong direction."

Crook said that there are "some reasonable" proposals among the 13 items offered by the CCM, including a ban on the sale of body armor. Other suggestions included a requirement that all rifles be registered.

"Registration of long guns? It's never going to happen because people aren't going to abide by that," Crook said. "We've got millions of guns in this state. Who's going to handle this? State Police? They don't have enough people to work the roads."

The CCM event was led by big-city mayors including Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch and New Haven Mayor John DeStefano Jr. in response to Adam Lanza's Dec. 14 rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School, killing 20 students and six adults after first killing his mother and taking her legally registered weapons.

He used an assault-style Bushmaster rifle in the school massacre.

"We're here because an atrocity of unspeakable proportions happened 20 miles from my house," Finch said. "Today's my son's 7th-year birthday. I'm sick of people telling me that his rights to be safe take a back seat to somebody's ridiculous infatuation with a war weapon. This is not what this state is about. This state is about protecting the babies. We lost 20 futures and their families lost 20 futures."

Attention Mr. Robert Crook, executive director of the Coalition of Connecticut Sportsmen, the 2nd Amendment ain't about hunting, you moron. The 2nd Amendment is about defending yourself against a tyrannical government — something you already have in CT.

What a loser. If this guy is the best you've got for a spokesman on 2nd Amendment issues in CT, you folks are so screwed.

He used an assault-style Bushmaster rifle in the school massacre.

Actually he didn't. His rifle was locked in the trunk of his car.

It's about time the Fudds start waking up. There will come a day when the left comes for their “sporting” weapons. It's for the children, don't you know.

It means that Finch, the loser mayor of Bridgeport, knows that his craphole of a city is a crime-ridden dump and he hasn’t got the guts to go after real criminals, so he decides to go after a softer target....the law-biding, decent people of Connecticut.

The “rifle” in the trunk was a shotgun according the video I saw.
