How the NRA is winning
The Washington Post ^ | January 18, 2013 | Chris Cillizza and Aaron Blake

It’s easy to think that in the wake of Wayne LaPierre’s angry press conference and the National Rifle Association’s tin-eared web video on President Obama’s daughters that the NRA is losing — and losing badly — in the fight over the proper place for guns in American society.

Easy and likely incorrect.

The National Rifle Association is at the center of a debate on guns and gun control.

There’s little doubt that the inside-the-Beltway crowd and those who have been longtime advocates of more gun control laws are outraged by the brash style that the NRA has adopted following the shootings in Newtown, Conn.

But, there’s also plenty of evidence to suggest that the NRA is regarded entirely differently in the country at large. Polling conducted by NBC News and the Wall Street Journal this week showed 41 percent of people had a favorable opinion of the NRA, while 34 percent viewed it unfavorably, a margin largely unchanged from a similar survey conducted in January 2011.

And a look at the longer-term trend line on views of the NRA by Gallup suggests a striking consistency in the overall impression Americans have of the gun rights group.

The GOP could learn a lesson or two from the NRA.

Defend your principles unapologetically, and attack mercilessly any who oppose them. Don’t appease. Don’t apologize. Don’t waver. Don’t compromise.

I am thinking when push comes to shove that only the South will stand, ans who knows for how long even they will be able to hold the line.

For sure if the NRA, GOP, and other organizations don't start putting their money where their mouth is and put out ads. It's clear the press is for Obama, repeating ad naseum phrases like "gun violence" or "gun lobby" to mold public opinion. We honestly have to get smart and get our own phrases out there. It's about "freedom from an oppressive government" or "fighting tyranny".

If we keep playing nice, don't commission focus groups to find ways to reach the American public and fight back, if we don't call them any names for fear of looking bad (like they just did with the NRA ad that didn't even call names) we are going down. When some idiot news freak comes out with something like "NRA targeted President's kids" we have got to start calling them out by name. Make them publicly defend their twisted reporting. As is they are free to use the word "targeted" without consequence. Words have power and we're letting thm run the board with their spin.

Dear Jay Carney, sweetheart baby snookums: The NRA ad was effective because it told the TRUTH about your gun grabbing boss. Deal with it. [Suicide would be appropriate.]

Well there you go folks, the NRA ‘is popular’ so they ‘are winning’- Forget the FACT that peopel all across this coutnry are losign hteir rights because they refuse to stand up to the chicago thugs and california thugs, and ny thugs, and and and (fill in the blanks)... thugs takign their rights away- the fact that the NRS is ‘popular’ with htose same popel who REFUSED to stand up for their rights- apaprentrly in soem people’s minds, eqautes to ‘winning’? Unbeleivable!

apprently we’re all goign to be sittign aroudn UNARMED and DEFENSELESS and slapping each other on the back and exclaiming ‘The NRA ‘won’- they are popualr with hte people”

Where is the Martin Luther King of the NRA? Where is the CHurchill? Where is the voice that unites and motivates the peopel to ACTION?

Instead we have ‘Lapierre givign an ‘angry’ itnerview’ and we’re suppsoed to beleive that his angry looks and demeanor is goign to stop the left fro mtrampling our rights?

Wayne gave the left the stink eye folks- don’t panic- the left is abotu to wilt any second now.... any second now..... wait for it.... (oh that’
s right, the NRA also put out an ad too- That’ll teach those Wascally no good lefties that we’e ‘serious’ abotu our rights [Not that we’ll actually act to protect our rights- but boy will we give them a piece of our mind and make htem ‘tremble in their boots’!)

[[How the NRA is winning]]

The NRA is ‘winning’? REally? Because I think millions of NY’ers and Millions of Chicago folks woudl dissagree! Ask the folsk in ‘gun free zones’ where it’s now ILLEGAL to own or possess a gun if the NRA ‘won’ in those districts!

Claimign that because the NRA ‘hass them ‘thinking’ that the ‘NRA is ‘winning’ Is a crock of crap- The left KNOWS NO SHAME- EVER! You can NOT force a leftie to regret ANYTHING they do- nor can you make them admit they were wrong- they are NEVER goign to have a ‘comming to Jesus moment’- The ONLY thing these thugs udnerstand is force- force them to lose their income- force them to back down by throwing htem out of office through immediate impeachment processes- Force them to answwer to the people isntead of the peopel beign forced to answer to them-

The NRA is NOT winning the war- they are only ‘winning minor skirmishes’ that amount to nothign more than a pisshole i nthe nsow- When I see the NRAQ leadign the amerrican peopel in an organized effort to EFFECTIVELY resist gun laws and mandates- and when I see the peopel standign up for their rights by refusing to comply- and hwne I see the fed gov and state gov’s backign down because they fear for their jobs and income- THEN and only then I will cede that the NRA is winning and not until then

NRA- the left doesn’t give a crap whether you or the peopel are ‘outraged’- outrage does NOTHING- UNLESS it is acgted upon- when you get that- lemme know, and I mgith concider donating again-

They havent voted yet,
hey,
Reid (on the list) comes from NV and there was NO excuse for losing that 2010 race against him. Now he's safe for another four years(from now) .

It really must burn your hide that the NRA is actually being effective.

It must further anger you, the 250,000+ membership they have gained in one month.

hehhehheh

We 2A defenders don’t know our own numbers, regionally especially. The NRA is doing all the heavy lifting. Maybe that’s it, and maybe it’s enough, but maybe it isn’t.

The NRA is busy in hand to hand combat politically, and are a strong arm, but wondering here about creating an umbrella organization, on the public field, under which all the local shooting clubs and training interests across whole regions could come together under one name and in tandem with one another to educate and inform, by way of one agenda, the CONSTITUTION, one mission, one curriculum, one effort.

Moochelle is doing it. She is now headlining Organizing for America, morphing that under the name of Organizing For Action.

Now, WTH does THAT mean? How about 2A defenders going more activist, and ORGANIZING FOR THE CONSTITUTION.

‘”Lapierre givign an ‘angry’ itnerview’ and we’re suppsoed to beleive that his angry looks and demeanor “

He never gave an angry interview. As stated above, even when hecklers started screaming, he was polite and waited as they were escorted out. He made well reasoned points, and gave no angry looks.

And we do not need a single messiah on guns like an MLK, or whatever. We need to attack them on a wide front, NRA leader here, GOA leader there, a Mayor who stands up, a Sheriff who announces he won’t enforce, Wyomig saying they will arrest feds who come to enforce illegal gun laws there, Yeagers angry video, the Texas congressman who says he will intrduce articles of impeachment, etc etc.

They need to feel the heat from a hundred directions. We don’t need one magic leader who will immediately be given the media rectal exam. They need to be overwhelmed.

[[Given that, the NRA’s goal — unstated, of course — is likely to keep what Congress passes on the small side in terms of impact.]]

And we all know how ‘effective’ capitulation is- just ask Israel how effective compromising is for them- The NRA SHOULD BE (but won’t of course) looking the govenrment flat in the eye and saying NO NEW GUN LAWS- YOU HAVE ENOUGH LAWS ALREADY- YOUR FAILURE TO ENFORCE THEM SHOULD NOT BE BLAMED ON AMERICANS- and if you try to force new gun laws on us, you will see an uprising that you in your feeble little minds NEVER imagiend coudl happen- because you folks, ladies and gentlemen, WORK FOR US- NOT the other way around- We the people ARE NOT your servents- and until you get that through your thick skulls, You’ll have a very clear lesson to learn the hard way”

buit of course- all we reallty get from the NRA is capitulations, compromises, and the leader givign congress the stink eye- then backign down when songress flexes their musckles.

[[the organization almost certainly recognizes that some sort of measure(s) restricting gun rights is likely to be made law.]]

REALLY? you ‘Recognize’ that do you? Are you a mouse or a man mr NRA? When are you goign to make it perfectly clear to congress that if they can’t enforce the massive maount of laws they already have, that they are NEVER goign to enact new laws because we won’t let them>? When are you goign to make it clear to them that it is ‘DEFINATELY CERTAIN that we the people are NOT goign to be pushed aroudn by our govenrment and made into criminals just for ownign guns, any logner?

When are you MR NRA goign to realize that cross loocks and silly ads and approval ratings have ZERO effect o nthe left? Millions of Aemricans are sendign the NRA billions of dollars- what the hell are you doign with that moneY? Adn why the hell aren’t you standign up for us and organizing the members to peacefulyl resits en mass so that oru govenrment gets a loud a lcear message that we are NOT goign to be bullied any logner?

And Washington post- please stop writign and printign assinien fictional stories abotu how the NRA is ‘winning’- America is LOSING (whiel the NRA higher ups make millions) and america HAS BEEN LOSING for a logn time now. What she needs is an effective leader and motivator- not a person who thinks that waggign a figner at the left is an effedctive means of standign up to them!

there are a lot of democrats who are gun owners, which is why Congress including the Senate won't be acting on anything more than trivia any time soon.

There must be large numbers of Democrat voters who are gun owners.

They like to be safe and unraped in their own homes just like the rest of us.
