I think a lot, maybe most patrol cars have a high powered rifle usually in the trunk.
Back in the 80s I lived in Western Kansas. There was a gang going across the country robbing, murdering and just having a good time.
A Kansas highway patrolman caught up with them. They shot at him then took off on foot. He got out a high powered bolt action and shot one through the head at 200 yards.
They deiced they had, had enough fun and surrendered.
I just remembered the name of the leader of the 1985 Kansas Gang. He was Daniel Remeta. They had murdered such innocent people as girl clerks at diners, people who worked at a grain elevator etc. Most of these murders were totally unnecessary and they just killed them for the fun of it.
My desk was right beside a Federal lawyer. He attended the trial for some reason. He said Remeta would turn around and make faces at the parents of a girl he had killed.
They eventually electrocuted him.
