BALTIMORE -- Earl Weaver, the fiery Hall of Fame manager who won 1,480 games with the Baltimore Orioles, has died, the team says. He was 82.

Weaver was traveling on an Orioles fantasy cruise in the Caribbean when he collapsed in his room with wife, Maryanne, at his side on the cruise's ship at about 2 a.m. Saturday, the New York Daily News reported.

Weaver never regained consciousness, the report said.

Huge Orioles fan back in the day as well as a Weaver fan...always looking and coaching for that 3 run homer on offense.

I’m glad his time came while doing something fun.

Rest in peace, Mr. Weaver.

A great old school baseball mind. I wonder what he thought of all the sabergeeks and the decision scientists?

A few weeks ago, I saw highlights of the 1970 WS, Weaver and a rookie manager named Sparky Anderson. The controversial play at home plate in which the ump became part of a Miller Lite ad mocking himself. That can't be 40+ years ago, can it?

It may still be on youtube, but there was a sound clip of Weaver swearing his head off on ‘Manager’s Corner’, a pregame show...supposedly it wasn’t really aired, just then goofing around.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWQbN0jFo_k

OK here it is—LOTS of swears but funny as hell
“Well Terry Crowley’s lucky he’s in f-— baseball..”
“Alice Sweet from Norfolk wants to know when’s the best time to put in her tomato plants.”

“Alice Sweet oughta worry about where the f-— her next lay is coming from...she ought get her outta the f-— bars and go hustling around the streets she may get a p—— stuck in her once in awhile...That’s it for Manager’s Corner, go f-— yourself, and the Manager’s Corner show on the Balt. Orioles f-—— Network!”

Also story I heard: A religious player asked Earl, “Would you like to go walk with the Lord with me today?”
Earl: “Son, I’d rather have you walk with the bases loaded.”

It was always an odd team that he ended up with. He had tons of pitching talent, and always three guys who could hit thirty homers each. But you can’t find any Weaver teams with stolen base guys. If anyone on his team stole more than ten bases a season....that was a big deal. It was pure entertainment to watch him leave the bench and argue for five minutes over some insignificant or minor play.

Weaver and billy Martin are tied for largest amount of dirt kicked on umpires and/or home plate.

Yes now that’s comedy but they’d have to spend some time bleeping it. Then there’s Lee Elia

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8S0CDtEz_Bo
(Also LOTS OF SWEARS. WEEI airs this but with bleeps.
“If they’re the real f-— Cubs fans they can kiss my ass.
My f-— ass! ...the MF people don’t even work. That’s why they’re at the game. 85 per cent of the people work, the other 15 are here. Rip those MFers...and those f— people boo.” )

I used to love Ron Luciano’s stories about Weaver. Truly classic.

Maybe so, but Tommy Lasorda always made sure he kicked the lime onto the umpire's pants, as it tends to eat away at the cloth.

I was on an inordinately longer than usual Caribbean cruise once and I noticed quite a few elderly with walkers on board.

I later learned that there were a couple of deaths (natural causes) during the cruise, and then noticed that the butter on the tables wasn’t as hard as it was the first day.

The connection was obvious.
