A Bulgarian politician today survived an extraordinary assassination attempt when a man stormed the stage and held a gun to his head as he was giving a speech.
Fortunately for Ahmed Dogan, leader of the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, the weapon misfired giving him time to react and hit the would-be assassins hand out of the way.
Before he can attempt a second shot the unidentified suspect is tackled to the ground by security guards and delegates attending the conference in Sofia.
Television footage showed the man jumping out of the audience and interrupting a speech by 58-year-old Dogan, who has led the party for almost a quarter of a century. Security guards and politicians are then seen beating and kicking the attacker as he is pinned to the ground.

Police said they had arrested a 25-year-old man from the Black Sea town of Burgas who was also carrying two knives.
The liberal MRF party represents ethnic Turks and other Muslims who make up about 12 percent of Bulgaria's 7.3 million-strong population.
Dogan is seen as one of Balkan country's most influential political figures. The MRF was a junior partner in the previous Socialist-led cabinet.

I’m inclined to suspect this was staged.
Are we sure it misfired? The drama of running up on stage seems more consistent with the Lefist “r psychology” of someone inclined to make threats but not really follow thru. Methinks the attacker expected the speaker to just stand there and submit, not fight back.

Whoa. By the skin of his teeth. Looks to me like a little .25 or some kind of purse pistol - lots of cheapies out there. I’ll leave that matter to the pistoleros on FR. The thing is, this guy is supposed to be from the Islamic faction in Bulgaria. Add to suicide nutjobs in Islam, their invention of political assassination and the amoral culture of the old Soviet bloc and I don’t have a problem believing this guy was real. If it wasn’t, I hope the “assassin” got an extra bonus for serious whuppin’ he got.

My bad. I watched the video before clearly reading the article. The Islamic faction is the one under the gun.

Like its namesake, the “Union Pistol” is known for not working reliably AND it is also widely known that the owner can't fire it.
