His grandfather was the socialist who ran for president multiple times. In those days, the socialist goal (one of them) was to stop the communists. Not that I’m excusing the guy competely. His father was in book publishing.
In the late 1940s, Norman Thomas came and spoke at our college assembly (a weekly event, known as “chapel”). I expected to see horns and a tail, but to my surprise he gave a pretty middle of road speech. I don’t recall that he ran again after that.

I had a tough time trying and could never understand how he fooled people the first time but how they can still be taken in by him is completely beyond my comprehension. It is as if part of the population is walking around saying the sunrise is in the West and the sunset is in the East and up is down, cold is hot, bitter is sweet etc. The idiots have completely taken over the asylum.
There are people walking around loose who actually believe still that the “Affordable Health Care Act” really has something to do with affordable health care. How can people be that crazy?
A few are permanently starstruck. They can't get over the whole "first Black President" thing.
Most of them just don't want a Republican in office and don't care much about anything else in politics.
