VATICAN CITY (AP) — The Vatican praised President Barack Obama's proposals for curbing gun violence, saying they are a "step in a right direction."

The Vatican's chief spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said Saturday that 47 religious leaders have appealed to members of the U.S. Congress "to limit firearms that are making society pay an unacceptable price in terms of massacres and senseless deaths."

"I am with them," Lombardi said, in an editorial carried on Vatican Radio, lining up the Vatican's moral support in favor of firearm limits.

"The initiatives announced by the American administration for limiting and controlling the spread and use of weapons are certainly a step in the right direction," Lombardi said.

Obama is trying to rally support for reinstating a ban on assault weapons...

Considering that Americans possess "about 300 million firearms," Lombardi said, "people cannot fool themselves that it is enough to limit the number and use (of guns) to impede in the future horrendous massacres like that of Newtown that shook the conscience of America and world, as well as that of children and adults. "

This Obama government is not concerned about the future horrenous massacres like Newtown - they are deathly afraid that a sizable portion of the armed citizenry will have finally had enough of his shit and rebel.

You’d think they were still surrounded by the blackshirts, the way they bow to totalitarianism.

No mention of limiting guns owned by government.

Governments murder far more of their own citizens than any other force, 262 million since 1900.

It would be far more honest for the Vatican to talk about disarming governments than talking about disarming citizens.

“The Vatican” has a lot of scandalous dissenters in it (for a hierarchical church with all the prerogatives that implies, I think the Roman Catholic church is not using its power very wisely — but I caveat my bias as an unabashed evangelical or as some put it “Protestant”). I can’t imagine the present pope taking a radical anti-private-arms stance though he may preach for general peace.

The Vatican got the health care bill stuck up their azz, (abprtion & Contraceptives)but they are still nosing into business that is none of theirs.

They are backing a Muslim

Tell me about God, Save my soul, let me decide about illegals, health care and my guns.

They are ignorant to what it means to be American. Theirs is 2 dimentional thinking to a 3 dimentional American reality.

Proving yet once again how idiotic the Vatican can be.

(AP) The Vatican praised President Barack Obama's proposals for curbing gun violence, saying they are a "step in a right direction."

I doubt the credibility of this article since the source is the far-left Associated Press. And, furthermore, just what is "The Vatican" [sic]? As I understand it (and I very well may be wrong), unless the Pope himself utters the words, there's nothing official in a statement attributed to an entity as nebulous as "The Vatican".

In any event, my church of Christ congregation is not a gun-free zone. Tomorrow, during worship services, there will be quite a few of us in the auditorium armed -- and that includes the preacher. Sure, we may sing without instrumental accompaniment but we certainly are accompanied by our firearms. It's no wonder that a thug has never tried to make off with our collection plate!

Looks like the all too common lame brained “blame the weapon” stance. Most of the things that such weapons in private hands are used to do, never hit the news at all because they are boringly peaceful. While it is a laudable Christian “thang” to be wary of using items through which Satan poses temptations to sin, in virtually all cases of murderous use, the gun did not tempt an otherwise innocent minded bearer to commit the murder. Rather the bearer got murder on his mind first, THEN got the gun to carry it out. And hardly any ban can make this significantly harder; it can only make it harder for honest citizens to keep THEIR guns to defend themselves.

In a nutshell this is plain wrong headed.

Well, obviously the Vatican spokesman has been poorly catechized and doesn’t speak for the Church.

I’d put an /s sarcasm tag at the end, but, unfortunately...
