In the wake of increased tension with Japan over disputed islands, China’s soldiers have been directed to be ready for a war in 2013 and also win it. Government Chinese media disclosed this in a report.
The report also said the soldiers are being prepared to the best possible level and that they are being trained for the purpose.
According to reports, in 2012, no such directive- of getting ready for a war and winning it- was given. The Chinese army has also been told to improve its activities and enhance information and intelligence gathering techniques.
In 20th century, Japan has captured certain territories belonging to China. War has been fought between China and Japan during 1894-95 and 1937-45.
After increased military and economic power, China has become aggressive when it comes to disputes related with land. China has the biggest contingent of armed soldiers and every year its defence budget has been increasing manifold.
China is not a lot different from Singapore in terms of its political system. And I have yet to hear about Singaporeans getting frisky with their government. China's low level of development means the economy has a long way to go before growth ends. I don't think that will be a factor for a while yet. A lot of this rhetoric is probably a way to keep the irredentist Chinese masses pacified.
John Chinaman is extremely nationalistic and anti-American. The anti-Americanism of the average Chinese isn't some kind of yellow peril myth conjured up out of thin air. Jackie Chan is just the tip of the iceberg - the guy wasn't even born in China, and he's a big time warmonger. The stories about Chinese journalists on assignment stateside with State Department minders applauding as they saw 9/11 unfold on big screen TV's are no myth. I encountered similar animosity towards the West (during which I had the opportunity to practice my Berlitz-acquired Cantonese and Mandarin) while seeing the sights in China with a tour group. If they had their druthers, Chinese troops would be burning Western capitals to the ground and laying down the law.
If they need to distract the Chinese people from what is going on in China, then yes, they will do it in a heartbeat. Just like almost every other leader in the world.

I don't see any big problems happening in the near future. The government is doing most of the right things in regard to infrastructure and encouraging both domestic and foreign investment. The problem with most Third World governments is that they encourage monopolies and sends forth armies of bribe-seeking bureaucrats to make the lives of business owners miserable. The Chinese government appears not to do so, and does not interfere with companies sprouting up like weeds all over the place. This is why the economy is booming and will continue to boom for decades (with occasional interruptions due to the business cycle) - a relative lack of government intervention, although a lot of palm-greasing over permits and taxes does take place.
It is blantantly obvious to me that China is preparing for war against the U.S.A. or a war with an ally, therefore U.S.A. An example of this is their carrier killer missiles. Only 1 or 2 other countries have an aircraft carrier, but the recipient is obvious who it was made for. I am sure they have at least 100 more weapon programs designed to counter the U.S.A.
I hope Japan has allies other than the obamanation.

We in the USA better be ready for War as well. We will be drawn into what ever starts and I fear we will be hit by an “electronic Pearl Harbor” —we need to start thinking of becoming self sustaining —a draft will be imposed, strict laws, camps, rationing, and an all out war effort. I hear the coming hoofbeats of war—2014 or 15 is my closest bet. It could be at any point-—Iran, North Korea, Africa, China, Pakistan—or what ever. It will be like a thief in the night...
All I wanted to know about Chinese military potential I learnt from their cocky attacks on Soviets and Vietnamese. On both occasions a tiny group of Russian border agents or armed Vietnamese civilians slaughtered countless Chinese mechanised troops without breaking a sweat. For centuries China is famous for numerous “formidable” military only capable for inter-clan feuds and population control. And useless to counter any external threat or wage agressive war. It is simply not about Chinese national character.
If not for American and Russian blood they could be a japanese colony.

A lot can happen in 40 years. Looking at lackluster Chinese performance against Vietnam in the 1970s, and using that to determine the capabilities of the modern Chinese armed forces, strikes me as rather optimistic, especially considering the turmoil that the Chinese military and officer corps went through during the Cultural Revolution.
What has really changed? A few stolen technology and better funding? It is not that wins wars. At best, China may follow Nazy Germany and Japan’s way to be crushed by the rest of the world.

Well everyone seems to be optimistic I can only find optimism in the possibility that China won’t want to piss off it’s biggest customer.
But that is where my optimism ends.
It’s all fun and games until somebody lobs a nuke.
Rhetoric aside, I don't think anybody's going to initiate a nuclear war. The whole point of fighting a war is to get stuff. War is expensive. Getting stuff to cover expenses is part of the rationale for war. Destroying that stuff in advance with nukes is so off-the-wall it's not even wrong.

Often, but far from always. Sometimes it's over ideology, who's got the biggest.. well you know, all sorts of things. WW-I was only marginally about getting territory, and the territory had already been gotten by the Austria-Hugarian Empire. It was more about the "big.. " factor. It was a damn bloody war that wrecked the economies of most of the participants, and the political systems of others.b
Similarly the US Civil war was more about ideology than getting stuff.
