Seven hostages were killed by their captors during a final raid by Algerian troops - at least 23 hostages and 32 hostage-takers died in the four-day stand-off, Algerian officials say.
Five Britons are feared dead or missing - five Norwegians are unaccounted for.
US President Barack Obama said blame for the violent outcome rested with the "terrorists" behind the attack.
"We will continue to work closely with all of our partners to combat the scourge of terrorism in the region," said Mr Obama.
His defence secretary, Leon Panetta, earlier told the BBC the US would go after al-Qaeda wherever they tried to hide.
French President Francois Hollande defended the Algerian response to the crisis as being "the most suitable".
"When you have people taken hostage in such large numbers by terrorists with such cold determination and ready to kill those hostages - as they did - Algeria has an approach which to me, as I see it, is the most appropriate because there could be no negotiation," he told journalists.

One of the articles said these Terrorists may have come from Libya....
Al-Qaeda has been decapitated and defeated ever since our fearless leader personally shot Osama.
Just more “less than optimal” “bumps in the road” as far as Hussein is concerned.
good thing the hostages didn’t have guns, there could have been even more deaths. /s
I guess the ‘workplace violence’ excuse won’t fly this time.
It’s a hard day when we’re all stunned to hear the president use the word “terrorism” to describe actual terrorism..
Never get caught alive by islamics. Off yourself somehow. You’re either going to die anyway or be beheaded on camera.
Innocent hard working people trying to support their families have died. Another stunning failure for the Obama foreign policy team. Whatever happened to the CIA, NSA, State Department and the Dept. of Defense rapid deployment capabilities? Bad leadership has consequences.
Obama is devastated since he found out that a number of these workers were behind on their union dues.
What you-tube video caused this? And how dare they put a damper on the President’s immaculation parties! What a bump in the road bummer.
Your warning should be heeded by all Americans for the coming years, if you’re an Obamanoid or not.
Looks like employees working in these gawd awful places should be issued those Damned Banned Assault Weapons, the real ones! No more gun free work zones!
You can go on liveleak or theync.com and look for execution video. Thousands of them. People lined up, chopped up and gunned down.
The average American doesn’t know and would care less if they were shown it.
“Whatever happened to the CIA, NSA, State Department and the Dept. of Defense rapid deployment capabilities?”
Looking for “enemies of the state” right here.
Infidels shouldn’t seek employment in islamic hellholes.
With all the violence shown in the movies, the average American probably thinks that it is all part of a Hollywood production and they just replenish their popcorn.
The jails won’t hold all of the people we will arrest after Benghazi and now Algeria,
We are going to get them all, we now have a great arrest record in Benghazi, One was arrested, not by us, and now he has been turned loose, We hope to do at least that well in Algeria.
I know we can count on Panetta and Obama to see that Justice is done by sending the Muslims another check and maybe some more F-16’s.
