Governor Cuomo tells Rev. Al Sharpton gun law also honors MLK ^ | January 19, 2013 | Kerry Wills and Jonathan Lemire

Gov. Cuomo stood with the Rev. Al Sharpton in Harlem on Saturday to tout the state’s tough new firearms laws — and how they can help neighborhoods plagued by gun violence.

Cuomo, in an address to the National Action Network to mark Martin Luther King Jr. Day, suggested the gun control legislation was another step on the road to the slain civil rights leader’s vision of social justice.

“We passed new gun laws, and we passed new gun laws on Martin Luther King Day,” Cuomo said. “Why? Because, it’s simple enough — innocent people have died.”

“How many times as a society do we need to see tragedy after tragedy after tragedy before we act?” he asked.

Cuomo highlighted the impact the law — dubbed the New York SAFE Act — would have in the historic upper Manhattan neighborhood. “Seventy-five percent of violent deaths in Harlem [are] due to guns,” Cuomo continued. “We have to get these illegal guns off the street once and for all. We need services in the community to end the violence.”

When Cuomo pushed through the new bill last week, New York became the first state in the nation to toughen its firearms regulations after the Newtown, Conn., school shooting.

The new law outlaws more types of assault weapons, eliminates ammunition magazines that carry more than seven rounds, increases the frequency of background checks and requires gun owners to renew their licenses every five years.

Sharpton, who has sometimes been a critic of Cuomo, applauded the governor’s efforts.

“What has happened in the state of New York has laid a foundation for historic change,” Sharpton said.

Gun owners — and some Republicans in Albany — have complained that the bill was rushed and is too restrictive.

Cuomo’s dash to pass new legislation has fueled whispers that he is shoring up his liberal bonafides in advance of a White House run four years from now.

The governor further touted his progressive agenda by slamming the NYPD’s controversial stop-and-frisk program for yielding too many marijuana arrests for young minorities.

“For a small amount of marijuana, you are giving a young person a criminal record that will be with them forever that will make it hard for them to get a job,” he said.

A lot of original gun control laws, after reconstruction, were in place to keep guns out of the hands of blacks. Liberals are ignorant of this fact.

Here's another fact, ConservativeInPA: America's first so-called "gun control" laws were passed when we were still English colonies. Their specific purposes were to prevent slaves and Indians from possessing firearms.

All I'm going to say about Sharpton is the most valuable slave of all is the one who hammers out shackles for himself and the rest of the slaves.

Hopefully “Reverend” Al allowed Little Andy to kiss his ring and his feet at the end of the conversation.

That is correct. I wanted to keep it recent, but in retrospect your argument is more compelling to me.

very true. No one talks about the elephant in the room.

Obama says nothing about the black gangs killing each other in Chicago! And Jesse Jackson says “gun manufacturers” - what a joke. Fakes, phonies and politicians.

These guys need to have their noses rubbed in it, by simply reminding people of the level of gun crime before the law vs. the level of gun crime after the law.

It should be done on a weekly basis. Like “gun violence in the first week of February in 2012, without the new gun laws; and gun violence in the first week of February in 2013, with the new gun laws.”
