Cops scramble for bullets while DHS stockpiles 1.2 billion rounds
Will the U.S. soon face a critical situation in which the federal government– primarily the Department of Homeland Security – possesses an ammunition surplus while local and state authorities face ammunition shortages and backlogs in purchasing more rounds?
Current trends could find the federal government with a strong ammunition advantage over local police and sheriff departments.
Earlier this week, a Georgia TV station reported that police officers training at the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office Gun Range were holding back on some live-range ammunition training due to shortage concerns.
Range Master Sgt. Ted Glisson told WSAV-TV in Savannah, “What we’ve incorporated is we’re doing more dry firing practice and this basically gets some people better suited to do what they need to when they come out here on the range.”
Dry firing is pulling the trigger but not firing a bullet.
Glisson said that while his unit currently had enough ammunition, he was concerned because “one of our suppliers was running short on what they had because there’s a mass – everybody’s trying to get a lot of ammunition and things like that.”
Similar reports are cropping up nationwide amid fears of a federal clampdown as the Obama administration continues to push gun legislation in the wake of the Sandy Hook massacre.
Brownells, the largest supplier of firearm accessories in the world, reported it had sold several years’ worth of ammunition in just a matter of hours.
The company released a statement apologizing for the delay in fulfilling orders, explaining the it had experienced “unprecedented” demand for AR-15 ammunition magazines since earlier in the week.

Just an observation- if you are using calibers like 7mm, .300 Winchester Magnum, or other calibers not commonly used for self-defense, there’s still ammo out there.... Dropped by an Academy sporting store and bought some fodder for some handguns to celebrate Gun Appreciation day this weekend. .40, .45, 5.56 NATO, 7.62x39, etc. were limited to two boxes each- and the shelves of those were bare.

While 1.2 billion rounds is a lot of ammo, the entire Federal and Local HLS organization has a combined 2.2 million first responders. From that perspective, 1.2 billion is not a huge stockpile. And one has to wonder what specific ammo has been bought by DHS. Mostly 9mm with some .223 for swat teams?
I was in Wal-Mart yesterday and stopped by at their ammo desk to see if they had any 9mm on hand.
They had NOTHING but a few boxes of 30-06 and a handful of shotgun boxes.
I think as it become clear that Congress will not give Obama what he wants re: gun control, production will once again overtake demand and ammo will begin to appear on shelves.
BTW, there is still some available online if you watch carefully. (I just checked cheaperthandirt.com and midwayusa.com and they had 9mm available--but it was the expensive stuff and not cheap practice rounds).
The trouble with Democrats is that they utterly despise the people who wear uniforms, as well as disdain them, thinking them little more than high school graduate thugs, who couldn’t get any other job, who obey any order given them.
But this leads to the conclusion on their part, that if they give a gun to a gorilla, he will be just as capable as a highly trained cop or soldier.
Look at the typical loser hired to work for DHS. He is not what you could think of as the cream of the crop. In fact, he is more like the old Nazi SA, recruited from prison and told to be street bullies.
The SA were effective against unarmed civilians with a deep respect for authority, or communists of the caliber of the Occupy crowd. But if they ever met any real resistance, they ran away like the cowards they were.
You put such people up against trained cops or soldiers, it doesn’t matter if they have 100 times the bullets. They will shoot their guns rapper style, sideways, not hitting anything, whereas a cop will use just one round, right between their horns. And the second one of them is injured or killed, the others will high tail it out of there.
Everyone would be better off preparing for a post-SHTF scenario of Excessive Rule of Law
and not one of Without Rule of Law.
You don’t build a police state and not use it.
Homeland Security doesn’t want law enforcement wasting ammunition on common criminals.
They will be needing it to counter the threat of veterans, white hetero males, old people, Bitter Clingers and other patriots.
I noticed the same thing w/ 10mm. Granted, ammo for it has always been a little pricey with a fairly limited selection in most stores, but in my experience so far, there's not been any real significant change in price or availability.
It almost made me wish there was an AR in .243 Winchester....

I went to a major gun show yesterday. It’s a standard show in our area held three times a year and always draws big crowds.
It was packed yesterday but only a short line formed to get tickets. It was nowhere near as crowded as 4 years ago when Obama was first Coronated.
It looked like almost all table spaces were occupied by sellers. There might have been room for another 10-12 tables maximum.
There were many private sellers in the parking lot, at the entrance, etc. - more than usual.
There were plenty of guns of most types for sale but prices on long rifles of all types were through the roof. Some types and models of rifles were nowhere to be found. There were plenty of “scary black assault rifles” at 2, 3, or even 4 times prices of a year or two ago.
I got the feeling many asking prices were set high just to see what people would pay.
Pistol prices seemed to be about the same as last year.
The tables for filling out forms were busy so it looked as if a lot of people were buying.
There are usually several big ammo sellers with pallets of bulk ammo at this show, but yesterday there were none. In fact, there was relatively little factory ammo available.
Some of the larger sellers might have had 6 - 10 boxes or 1 or 2 spam cans of some calibers but there was no one selling bulk ammo in quantity. Even non-military stuff like .38, .357, or 30-30 was in short supply.
All ammo prices were high. Shotgun shells were high and there were no bargains. Rifle and pistol ammo prices were outrageously high - even on the oddball old calibers.
Examples: .38 Special ammo was $30 to $50 a box.
Boxes of .22 ammo were priced the same at $30 - $50 per 500 rounds - the same boxes that were around $15 a few months ago.
It was a disappointing show because of the high prices and lack of ammo.
Didn’t the British confiscate the colonists’ armory supplies? And then cut off importation of gun powder in the leadup to the Revolutionary War? What do the Democrats have planned for us?

Yeah, you can still find ammo online, but you have to be quick if you want it. Cabelas had the 100 round boxes of 9mm FMJ on Friday morning. All gone by Friday afternoon. The same thing happened with the 2100 round cans of Federal .22LR about two weeks ago. It lasted a little longer, and I’m still kicking myself for hesitating and not buying at least one.
You might want to consider 6.8mm.
My Guess is that Barry is creating another “Crisis” that his regime will have to fix. Their will be an increase in crime by (Sons of Obama) the police will complain they don’t have any ammo....Barry will determine this is a National emergency and delcare the need for the feds to purchase most of the future production of ammo.

Yep, they do and a fine caliber it is. Unfortunately it will take a long time to get one unless you are lucky and want to pay the premium price at a gun show. I ordered a flat top match barrel upper from Armalite for my AR-10 last December. When can I expect delivery I asked? How about November of 2013.

They say that there’s no such thing as bad publicity. Unfortunately for the Eastern Sports & Outdoor Show, I don’t think that’s the case for the news generated by their ban on modern rifles. All of the regional headlines about the show just a couple of weeks out are now about the volume of exhibitors who are pulling out of the show and leaving empty booth space behind. That is decidedly bad when it comes to convincing consumers that they should hand over $14 a day to browse empty tables.

A few weeks ago good 9mm plinking ammo was $12/50.
Now, the one place in the metro area that has it, wants $29/50.
I’ll just wait for my on-line backorder thank you.
After 50+ years of handloading for shotguns, rifles, and handguns the only time I have been injured by defective ammo was when firing a 6.5mm Swede Mauser rifle using PMC FACTORY AMMO from a batch that was mistakenly loaded with a fast burning propellant. I got a badly bruised hand when a primer blew out and drove the firing pin rod back into my right hand. All I got from PMC was a defensive attitude when I called the factory and a 20 round replacement box of ammo that I was afraid to fire.
Lots of .40cal HPs, too.

Two things:
As I understand it, DHS mostly ordered hollow points. If SHTF, ball ammo, as the world’s militaries will tell you, will do just fine. Stock up.
At a gun show the other day (HUGE crowds!) there was still a fair amount of ammo for sale for almost all standard calibers.
Three things, actually: If you’re low on ammo, the use of dry fire training uses NO ammo and is incredibly effective for many aspects of improvement. The only caveat is to learn very, very well - and put into practice! - the safety considerations that prevent accidents while “dry” firing.
Just how many rounds are needed for the average prepper? Be realistic: besides using it for barter, or supplying the neighbors who have come to join in, anyone good enough to still be alive after expending - let’s say - a thousand rounds with any accuracy is gonna find a great deal of the common rounds (and guns and mags) lying around among the fallen.
I have never before seen ammo supplies as low as they are now at local shops. But that includes .22LR, not a caliber you’d expect to see DHS stockpiling. .45LC wadcutter is up to 70 cents/round. At the current rate, your ammo will be worth a fortune soon.

A couple of follow up questions to the gun show.
What was the location?
Was anyone selling magazines? Especially what about 30 rd AR-15 magazines. Were there any to be found and what was the price? Do you recall any other magazines (AR-10, M-14, etc) for sale?
How was the pace of selling - was it all sold out by mid morning or did it take longer?
What was the hottest item - sounds like ammunition so far.
Is that 2.2 million on top of the 2 million or so uniformed services?

.22 LR is crazy hard to find. I suspect that is because there are so many .22LR already in people’s hands and they tend to be very accurate and reliable weapons.
Also, they are quite lethal, despite their history of being used primarily for varmint plinking. If you get hit with a .22LR at 400 yards or under, there is a hole clean through you. If it doesn’t kill you, two or three guys will be needed to cart you off.
Oh yeah, and if you had to get out of dodge quickly and load up on ammo to carry while you flee, you could carry 1,000 rounds of .22 on you fairly easily.
After the 2008 election, the ammo that was REALLY hard to find was .22 subsonic.
I finally was able to buy a box or two late 2009.
I doubt you’ll find that anywhere in a retail store today.
Looking for .22 rounds for weeks now, finally I found some and spent $90 on 100 rounds of Sellier & Bellot .22 Hornet 45gr. last Tuesday.
You believe that? Not only will you not find subsonic, you will pay through the teeth for basic rounds.
I know that supply and demand on ammo will reach equilibrium with time, but I just was not comfortable with how little ammo I had on hand. Fo what I paid, I should have gotten hundreds of rounds...

I’ve been told by 3 Walmart stores that they are no longer ordering ammo, per instructions from their corporate offices. Count me as a pissed off Texan who is boycotting Walmart until they quit caving to Progressive Gun-Grabbers.
Had to travel to a Houston gun show to find anything other than 30.06 or shotgun ammo. When I got there, there were over a dozen empty vendor tables. A local news guy told me why: Those were the tables reserved for ammo dealers who couldn’t get ammo to sell.
My local dealer is getting a big shipment tomorrow and I am loading up.
Sounds like a good atmosphere to go into the gun making business. How hard could it be make ammo? I’m looking forward to locally made arms here in Tennessee. Ah capitalism.

Homeland Security on guard for 'right-wing extremists'
WASHINGTON – A newly unclassified Department of Homeland Security report warns against the possibility of violence by unnamed “right-wing extremists” concerned about illegal immigration, increasing federal power, restrictions on firearms, abortion and the loss of U.S. sovereignty and singles out returning war veterans as particular threats.
The report, titled “Right-wing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment,” dated April 7, states that “threats from white supremacist and violent anti-government groups during 2009 have been largely rhetorical and have not indicated plans to carry out violent acts.”
“Proposed imposition of firearms restrictions and weapons bans likely would attract new members into the ranks of right-wing extremist groups as well as potentially spur some of them to begin planning and training for violence against the government,” the report continues. “The high volume of purchases and stockpiling of weapons and ammunition by right-wing extremists in anticipation of restrictions and bans in some parts of the country continue to be a primary concern to law enforcement.”
Most notable is the report’s focus on the impact of returning war veterans.
“Returning veterans possess combat skills and experience that are attractive to right-wing extremists,” it says. “DHS/I&A is concerned that right-wing extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize veterans in order to boost their violent capacities.”
Why does Homeland Security need 1.4 billion rounds of ammunition?
The Department of Homeland Security has purchased 1.4 billion rounds of ammunition- that is not a typo -- during the last six months. This includes 450 million rounds of .40 hollow point, 200 million rounds of .223 rifle ammunition, and 176,000 rounds of .308 168-grain hollow point boat tail (HPBT) that is used almost exclusively as ammo for sniper rifles.
Why is everyone all up in arms about the recent purchase by Homeland security of 1.4 Billion rounds of ammunition?
Our undeclared Foreign War in Iraq Consumes about 70,000,000 (70 Million) Rounds of Ammunition Each Year, which would take about 20 years to consume 1.4 billion rounds of ammunition ordered by the Department of Homeland Security alone, not including all the ammunition ordered by the weather service, Social Security, etc! 20 Years To Use All 1.4 Billion Rounds Of This Ammo?
Why did DHS purchase 28,000 tons of ammunition? Why did DHS purchase almost half a billion rounds of hollow point ammunition, banned by the Hague Convention of 1899 for use in international warfare, that is carefully designed to kill it intended targets? Americans have no good answers to these questions since the DHS is now refusing to respond to media inquires on the subject. Pull back the curtain of silence by asking your Congressmen and Senators these questions.
