It’s snowing, and it really feels like the start of a mini ice age
UK Telegraph ^ | January 20, 2013 | Boris Johnson

Posted on 01/21/2013 8:02:15 AM PST by rightwingintelligentsia

"The Sun is god!” cried JMW Turner as he died, and plenty of other people have thought there was much in his analysis. The Aztecs agreed, and so did the pharaohs of Egypt. We are an arrogant lot these days, and we tend to underestimate the importance of our governor and creator.

We forget that we were once just a clod of cooled-down solar dust; we forget that without the Sun there would have been no photosynthesis, no hydrocarbons — and that it was the great celestial orb that effectively called life into being on Earth. In so far as we are able to heat our homes or turn on our computers or drive to work it is thanks to the unlocking of energy from the Sun.

As a species, we human beings have become so blind with conceit and self-love that we genuinely believe that the fate of the planet is in our hands — when the reality is that everything, or almost everything, depends on the behaviour and caprice of the gigantic thermonuclear fireball around which we revolve.

I say all this because I am sitting here staring through the window at the flowerpot and the bashed-up barbecue, and I am starting to think this series of winters is not a coincidence. The snow on the flowerpot, since I have been staring, has got about an inch thicker. The barbecue is all but invisible. By my calculations, this is now the fifth year in a row that we have had an unusual amount of snow; and by unusual I mean snow of a kind that I don’t remember from my childhood: snow that comes one day, and then sticks around for a couple of days, followed by more.

And we, here in the Mid-Atlantic as well as much of the US, haven’t had diddly-squat for snow since 2003’s “President’s Day Blizzard”. Trade ya for some, Boris...

We’re getting some flurries today here in Pgh, but it’s supposed to be c-c-c-COLD for the next few days. I think the high tomorrow isn’t supposed to surpass 15 degrees F.

We’ve had clear conditions & temps in the 20’s - very unusual for the mid-Willamette Valley in Oregon. I’d prefer our usual warmer temps & rain to this. Bring on the Global Warming!

With the exception of “SnowMageddon” in 2010, I agree.

Good observation...the sun has gone on strike....if we don’t get a decent crop of sunspots in the next 11 year cycle....prepare for at best another 400 year mini-ice age.

The funny thing about an ice age is that the rainfall and snowfall actually decreases once an Ice Age has taken hold...

You’re right; I forgot that one event!

I don’t remember “winter snow cover” on the ground from Dec-Mar/Apr, since the late-50s/early-60s, in ILL.

Looks like global warming has been delayed on account of snow in southern Michigan.

Those “arctic express” fronts are bone-chilling & pipe-bursting, but little/no snow cover to speak of. I don’t remember any Dec-Mar ‘snow cover’ since 50s/60s, back in IL.

Global warming got its start in the UK with PM Margaret Thatcher in 1979. Where ever the UK goes the US is to follow not too far behind.

The trouble with memory is that it is not very accurate. We usually only remember extreme or special events.

This might help - January snowfall for Joliet, IL since 1943. It looks like 2012 was quite a high snowfall year, and nothing outstanding in the 50's or 60's.

I don't know where you are exactly, but you can look it up at the link.

78-79 was a bad one in Chicago, this year nothing at all but flurries about 30 miles west of Chicago

That chart is suspicious. NR for January 1979 snow. Chicago had a 20+ inch snowstorm that year.
