Teed off: Golf star Phil Mickelson may bolt California over taxes
Fox ^ | 1.21.13 | Staff

For golf legend Phil Mickelson, the low 60s makes for a great score on the links — and a lousy tax rate in his home state of California.

Mickelson said “drastic changes” are ahead for him due to federal and California state tax increases that have pushed his tax rate to what he figures adds up to “62, 63 percent.” The left-hander will talk more about his plans — possibly moving out of California or even retiring altogether — before his hometown Farmers Insurance Open, the San Diego-area event that begins Thursday at Torrey Pines.

"If you add up all the federal and you look at the disability and the unemployment and the Social Security and the state, my tax rate's 62, 63 percent," Mickelson said. "So I've got to make some decisions on what I'm going to do."

Oh sure, California liberals will say good riddance and seek to charge him an exit tax. But they just don't realize that from corporations to citizens, they are driving out the best and the brightest.

Do golfers have to pay State income taxes on their winnings made while “working” in a given State?

Sorry, I guess Cali is a nice place. But, why would ya live there if you could live somewhere else tax free and has nice golfing; maybe a place like Florida.

California is toast. We tried living there but left soon after discovering all the taxes. State income tax, property tax, motor vehicle licensing tax, sales tax, tax on utilities, etc are all ridiculously high. Then you have an influx of under-educated, under-skilled illegals. The golden state is now the burned toast state.

Only reason is much better weather year round near the coast. In Florida I sweat in January, it is humid there!

Mickelson is actually right handed, but plays golf left handed.

His father taught him “mirror image” style at an early age and he remained lefty at golf.

To live in Kalifornia you almost have to be an “illegal American Citizen” and spit yourself out of the system...

“Do golfers have to pay State income taxes on their winnings made while “working” in a given State?”

As I understand it, the answer is “yes” unless there is some qualifier in the state's income tax code. For example: If Mickelson plays a tournament in NY, though he lives in CA, he'll owe taxes to both states.

If I were him, I'd leave CA for TX or FL where they have no income taxes and are much friendlier to the taxpayers with his income. Screw CA and their money grubbing parasite government.

On winnings, yes.

But, he as most of the known players make WAYYY more in endorsements than golf winnings.

If you are a CA resident the state wants a share of everything you earn, regardless of where you got it.

Lefty is right to want to leave but it may be too late. Moonbeam is already putting together a bill that will enact an “exit tax” designed to penalize those who vote with their feet.

Florida’s got some attractive state taxes and a lot of the golf pros live there.

Not to worry, Kalifornia will make damn sure that get EVERYTHING they can before he tries his escape.

But hey, welcome all ILLEGALS with open arms!
