BOSTON Among the many changes that Christopher M. Mayer wanted to make when he became publisher of The Boston Globe in 2010 was to transform a particularly unattractive section of the newsroom.
Mr. Mayer wanted to fill in what he called the center of the doughnut on the second floor acres of abandoned desks once occupied by more than 100 workers in the payroll, classified and advertising departments.
Those jobs have largely disappeared in recent years from The Globe, which is owned by The New York Times Company, and Mr. Mayer faces a situation familiar to many publishers around the country as their staffs shrink. While most newspapers lack cash, employees and a clear strategy for finding greater profits in the digital age, they do not lack for office space. Mr. Mayer embarked on a search for creative ways to use that space. As a result, The Globe has turned its empty offices into a public community space, bringing in start-up technology companies, bands visiting to perform for the companys Internet station RadioBDC and special events like the programming code marathon it held for technology enthusiasts. The projects occupy what looks like a re-created living room, where a colorful mix of young entrepreneurs, gray-haired journalists and bands with names like the Street Dogs and Animal Kingdom pass through. Steps away, Globe reporters and editors pore over articles.

Ping to newspaper deathwatch list.
Are we sure that isn’t the “Center of the Commode” vs “Center of the Donut?”
After all, the Globe is most certainly populated by the types of matter more commonly found in the commode.
Sorry, but all my tolerance for libtards is now gone.
Totally.

4 months into his first term, the media gushed Obama was “helping workers spend more time with their families”
You know what that meant? It meant the unemployment rate was going up.
I’m thinking “urban pig farming”.
I will be anyone a paycheck that they are taking a very hefty tax deduction on “utilizing this space” for charitable or community services. My guess is that there is an Obama GRANT out there somewhere they are taking advantage of. Hell, who knows? They may even be making money on it. Liberals NEVER do anything with their own money.
I eagerly await news that the New York Times has gone bankrupt and has ceased publication.
With it’s recent and rapid expansion the NRA could use some temp space!
Didn’t see the name in the article?

Our latest plan for commercial success: We couldn't get any work done rattling around in an empty warehouse ... and we couldn't sublet our sorry bullpen space to any paying customers ... so we were forced to fix it up ... and we still couldn't find anybody who would pay rent ... so now we are trying to give the space away!
LOL. I was thinking Boy Scouts.
Let Occupant agitators live there. 60 colleges in the greater boston area. There have to be some stinky hippy commies who want someplace to get in from out of the cold.
It won’t take long after members of the “community” are in the building that things will begin to disappear from the paper’s office. The “community” will steal them blind.
Go for it “community!”
Mine too. I wonder when the slime bags will start a Reichstag fire?
The only answer is to merge the Times and Globe and call it The Glob of Time (We now have lots of time, and a way too much of Times).
Also during WWII Italian prisioners of war were kept in that area.
I would love to see that Liberal rag go under.-Tom
Mine too. I wonder when the slime bags will start a Reichstag fire?
You're assuming they already didn't... funny how many mass shootings are happening all of a sudden.
Oh, this is all so gay, so cute, so noble, so democratic.....white collar Globe staff rubbing shoulders with struggling artistes from the streets.
Future losers all of 'em in Obama's coming non-existent job market.
I hope the headline writer in his cubbyhole in the OccupyGlobe Building is ready with the title "Re-arranging Swivel Chairs on the Globe Boat to Detroit."

What could possibly go wrong?
We all know that liberals treat free stuff as if it was their own.
Of course, most of them trash their own stuff too.

**I eagerly await news that the New York Times has gone bankrupt and has ceased publication.**
They’ll get a “too important for the Public Good to fail” bailout before that ever happens.
NY Times isn’t ever going anywhere, and they just get more powerful by the day. Look at how they influenced CJOTUS Roberts.
So they're trying to pretend they're 'cool' and relevant?
If the Globe had competed for the respect and trust of their readers ( ALL their readers NOT just the liberals ) instead of competing for 'prizes' they might not be in this spot...
Almost every mass killing by an adult gets the press 'wondering' if it was done by a right winger... until the guy's caught. And it's the same old same old. We've been blessed they've caught all these killers - one time we won't be that lucky.
Personally, I'd prefer to see the New York Times go the same route as Pravda — being bought by nationalist patriots and becoming something useful.
The paper has a good history. There was a day that the New York Times was run by conservative Presbyterians who would today by on the far right wing of the political and religious spectrum of American society. The paper established its reputation for investigative journalism by attacking and exposing the (then illegal) abortion industry in New York City in the late 1800s and early 1900s. More recently, it's been a family-owned operation by a prominent Jewish family who were among the people who successfully integrated the New York Jewish community into the city's mainstream of educated society, although during the days of anti-Jewish prejudice, the family was careful to avoid the paper being seen as a "Jewish newspaper," but rather was an example of how a minority group could succeed and own a major pillar of New York society.
The New York Times, unlike most media corporations, is family owned. That means they have a degree of flexibility that typical corporations do not, and personal pride of ownership sometimes trumps logic and economics. When/if the newspaper goes bankrupt or approaches bankruptcy, I hope someone on the conservative side of the political spectrum makes the Sulzberger family an offer they cannot refuse.
The Sulzberger family being what it is, that may mean a coalition of Conservative and Orthodox Jewish businessmen with deep roots in New York society who convince the Sulzbergers that it is in their best interest to sell to someone before the banks take the paper over.
That could end up being a good thing.
Yes, I see your point. I was in the military for 20 years myself. I just wonder, when the crap hits the fan, which side will the military be on?
They don’t need to wait for one to be a conservative. They are using the current ones to run roughshod over the second, and first, amendments.
