A Downsized Boston Globe Opens Its Space for Community Uses (Space vacated by laid-off workers)
The New York Times ^ | 1/20/2013 | Christine Haughney

BOSTON — Among the many changes that Christopher M. Mayer wanted to make when he became publisher of The Boston Globe in 2010 was to transform a particularly unattractive section of the newsroom.

Mr. Mayer wanted to fill in what he called “the center of the doughnut” on the second floor — acres of abandoned desks once occupied by more than 100 workers in the payroll, classified and advertising departments.

Those jobs have largely disappeared in recent years from The Globe, which is owned by The New York Times Company, and Mr. Mayer faces a situation familiar to many publishers around the country as their staffs shrink. While most newspapers lack cash, employees and a clear strategy for finding greater profits in the digital age, they do not lack for office space. Mr. Mayer embarked on a search for creative ways to use that space. As a result, The Globe has turned its empty offices into a public community space, bringing in start-up technology companies, bands visiting to perform for the company’s Internet station RadioBDC and special events like the programming code marathon it held for technology enthusiasts. The projects occupy what looks like a re-created living room, where a colorful mix of young entrepreneurs, gray-haired journalists and bands with names like the Street Dogs and Animal Kingdom pass through. Steps away, Globe reporters and editors pore over articles.

Are we sure that isn’t the “Center of the Commode” vs “Center of the Donut?”

After all, the Globe is most certainly populated by the types of matter more commonly found in the commode.

Sorry, but all my tolerance for libtards is now gone.

Totally.

4 months into his first term, the media gushed Obama was “helping workers spend more time with their families”

You know what that meant? It meant the unemployment rate was going up.

I will be anyone a paycheck that they are taking a very hefty tax deduction on “utilizing this space” for charitable or community services. My guess is that there is an Obama GRANT out there somewhere they are taking advantage of. Hell, who knows? They may even be making money on it. Liberals NEVER do anything with their own money.

I eagerly await news that the New York Times has gone bankrupt and has ceased publication.

With it’s recent and rapid expansion the NRA could use some temp space!

Didn’t see the name in the article?

Our latest plan for commercial success: We couldn't get any work done rattling around in an empty warehouse ... and we couldn't sublet our sorry bullpen space to any paying customers ... so we were forced to fix it up ... and we still couldn't find anybody who would pay rent ... so now we are trying to give the space away!

Let Occupant agitators live there. 60 colleges in the greater boston area. There have to be some stinky hippy commies who want someplace to get in from out of the cold.

It won’t take long after members of the “community” are in the building that things will begin to disappear from the paper’s office. The “community” will steal them blind.

Go for it “community!”

The only answer is to merge the Times and Globe and call it The Glob of Time (We now have lots of time, and a way too much of Times).

There was a tidal creek there where the Globe is now, and I used to swim in it as a kid.
There was controversy in 1958 when the Boston Globe moved to its current location onto the tidelands marsh.

Also during WWII Italian prisioners of war were kept in that area.

I would love to see that Liberal rag go under.-Tom

You're assuming they already didn't... funny how many mass shootings are happening all of a sudden.

Oh, this is all so gay, so cute, so noble, so democratic.....white collar Globe staff rubbing shoulders with struggling artistes from the streets.

Future losers all of 'em in Obama's coming non-existent job market.

I hope the headline writer in his cubbyhole in the OccupyGlobe Building is ready with the title "Re-arranging Swivel Chairs on the Globe Boat to Detroit."

What could possibly go wrong?

We all know that liberals treat free stuff as if it was their own.

Of course, most of them trash their own stuff too.
