TRENDING: CNN Poll: Do Americans agree with Obama on climate change and immigration?

Washington (CNN) - Saying "we will respond to the threat of climate change," President Barack Obama used his second inaugural address to put the divisive issue back on the front burner. But according to a new national survey, Americans are divided over whether global warming is a man made phenomenon.

The president also used his speech to highlight the controversial issue of illegal immigration, and a CNN/ORC International survey released Tuesday also indicates that a bare majority of the public says the main focus of the federal government should be on developing a plan that would allow undocumented immigrants to become legal residents, rather than deporting them.

The president warned in his Monday address that failure to respond to climate change "would betray our children and future generations. Some may still deny the overwhelming judgment of science, but none can avoid the devastating impact of raging fires, and crippling drought, and more powerful storms."

According to the poll, which was conducted last week, 49% agree with the White House that global warming is a proven fact and is due to emissions from cars, power plants and factories. That's twice as high as the number who say that global warming has not been proven, as well as the 24% who say that it is a proven fact but is not due to manmade sources. But the 49% figure is down seven points from 2007.

There's an expected partisan divide on the question, with two-thirds of Democrats saying global warming is man made. That number drops to 48% among independent voters and is at 28% among Republicans.

ALSO FROM THE POLL ON IMMIGRATION:

By a 53%-43% margin, people questioned in the poll say that main focus of the federal government should be on developing a plan that would allow undocumented immigrants to become legal residents, rather than deporting them.

That's a switch from 2011, when by a 55%-42% margin, Americans said that deporting undocumented residents and stopping more of them from coming into the country should be the main focus of U.S policy on illegal immigration.

As expected, the poll indicates a partisan divide on the issue, as well as a generational divide, with younger people saying allowing undocumented immigrants to become legal should be the top priority, and a slight plurality of those 50 and older saying the emphasis should be on deportation and border security.

If there is climate change, it is because of illegals.

Maybe not, but I saw the same thing for four years, yet somehow this fraud is still in power. It doesn't matter what Americans want, we don't count anymore because the assholes in congress are scared of their shadows and even if they oppose 0bama, he'll just issue an executive order.

1) Obama announces a policy goal

2) the MSM produces polls showing the public's support

3) GOP runs for the tall grass

4) goal is made law in congress.

5) If congress mounts successful challenge, president signs EO, goal is achieved regardless.

6) MSM fawns over president's grasp of the process, GOP assumes fetal position at the prospect of the next political battle.

Not exactly what the founders intended, but pretty efficient.

As expected, the poll indicates a partisan divide on the issue, as well as a generational divide, with younger people saying allowing undocumented immigrants to become legal should be the top priority, and a slight plurality of those 50 and older saying the emphasis should be on deportation and border security.

The problem is that most people don't understand what an amnesty entails. If they were given the facts, the results would be far different.

Any legislation that legalizes the status of those who broke our laws by entering our country illegally and allows them to stay and work here is amnesty. We must not only prevent the Democrats and some moderate Republicans from hijacking the meaning of the word amnesty, but the public must be made aware about the true impact of an amnesty. The Heritage Foundation (Robert Rector) concluded that the cost of amnesty would be $2.6 trillion just for increased entitlement program costs for those receiving the amnesty.

And the number of additional LEGAL immigrants who would join those who were the recipients of amnesty through chain migration, i.e., family reunification, would approach 70 million over a 20-year period, assuming there are only 12 million illegal aliens. We cannot assimilate such numbers. An amnesty would destroy the United States of America with the stroke of a pen.

We had a one-time amnesty in 1986. The proponents said it would never happen again and that we would secure our borders and penalize employers who hired illegal aliens. It was included in the Simpson-Mazzoli bill, which also included the requirement to have been in the US for five years, learn English, pay a fine, and get to the back of the line for citizenship. The process was rife with fraud and Ed Meese called amnesty one of Reagan's biggest mistakes. It should also be noted that once the possibility of an amnesty was announced, a flood of illegals entered the US.

The USG estimated that 1 million would apply, but the true number turned out to be 2.7 million. We now have 12 to 20 million illegal aliens--two million of whom are considered criminal aliens. Once they receive amnesty they will be eligible to work legally and receive many of the benefits of the welfare state including Obamacare. We have 23 million Americans looking for fulltime employment. And a second amnesty will only beget a third one. When you reward something, you get more of it.

I wonder how many of those who took the poll know these facts. They probably would have given a different answer.

The communists have control of America and the next four years will see a dictatorship unless we take the Senate and start impeachment of both King Obama and Biden.

I propose that CNN ask their viewers the following:

1) What exactly IS “Obama’s policy on climate change”?
2) If fully implemented, how much would “Obama’s policy on climate change” actually alter global temperatures and over what time frame? 0.1 degrees in 20 years? More? Less? Is the “improvement” proven or conjectural?
3) Is this a meaningful “improvement” compared to the projected problem?
4) What is the comprehensive cost of “Obama’s policy on climate change”? How much will the average standard of living be reduced to achieve that, and for how long?

Not good enough. You post thousands of threads trashing conservatives. Give us your opinion of what you post. I’m very suspicious of your loyalties. Humor me.

Trash President Buckwheat. Tell us how much you dislike democrat Nazis. Do something besides posting crap that rips conservatives.

RE: Not good enough. You post thousands of threads trashing conservatives.

Then you obviously have not been following all of my posts. You’re simply picking and choosing and then forming an inaccurate opinion.

I post thousands of threads SUPPORTING conservatives as well.

Here are just two today (from conservative leaning websites):

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2980674/posts

and here:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2980699/posts

As for this thread in particular, HOW IS THIS THREAD TRASHING CONSERVATIVES? This thread is simply showing what a mainstream poll reports. It was posted FOR DISCUSSION and for FReepers to refute if they can.

And oh yeah, if America is trending leftward, how is observing this unpleasant news, trashing conservatives?

If I posted a report that says Obama won the November 2012 elections, is that trashing conservatives simply because you (and me ) don’t like the news?

You need to clear up your thinking my friend because I don’t see it in your above post.

I was busting up listening to pundits argue about this.

The fact of the matter is Americans will be headed to Mexico soon to find work.
