CHICAGO (Reuters) - Graduation rates at high schools have improved to their highest level in nearly 40 years, driven by a surge in the percentage of Hispanic students earning diplomas, a government study released on Tuesday showed.
Education Secretary Arne Duncan said .. he was especially encouraged by the improvement among Hispanic students, whose graduation rates surged 10 percent to 71.4 percent between 2006 and 2010, ..
Across the United States, four-year graduation rates were highest for students of Asian and Pacific-Islander heritage at 93.5 percent, .. white students at 83 percent, and Hispanic students at 71.4 percent, according to the study.
American Indian and Alaskan Native students graduated .. 69.1 percent, .. black students at 66.1 percent,...

and Of course , any success is on no way shape or form is connected to any thing done before the Mighty One came onboard.
a surge in Hispanics.. coincidence?
Does A Brave 'New America' Lie Ahead? (or just another plantation nation. this time the slaves are just a different color?)
They’ve finally lowered standards enough to let the idiots graduate.
You hit it ON THE NOSE!
Now now.. data is the tinker toy of the left, yaknow..
One needs to keep in mind most elected officials are products of public education. (just tossing a dart there..)
Until I retired I reviewed a lot of job applications, all from HS graduates. I wouldn’t have let half of them out of third grade.
I teach classes to prepare students for the ACT and the ASVAB. They are not educated but, hey, it's a job.
And it only costs us 47 billion a year.
yeah in California now all you have to do is show up and be able to write your name on an EBT card application.
zero point zero - yes Blutarski, you too can graduate.
My civics teacher was Miss Mildred Funk, they didn't come any better.
Half the graduates can’t read their diplomas.
Actually, the reason is quote ironic: there are no jobs to take, so they stay in school.
Most versions of the Dream Act say you have to be in school or college to qualify. Those who are illegal and in school are trying to finish school to qualify for amnesty.
We wouldn’t hired ANY of these mexican HS grads here for our production office. We simply instructed the first group for a spelling test of 50 words and it was a disaster.
They still spell definitely with an “a”. Thank you union teacher!
I doubt seriously that the percentage has changed one bit. What has happened is that they have incorporated the “BLS” Bureau of Lying Statistics model for developing and presenting the statistics. In Chicago it is very easy to change the one figure that drives the results ... they reduce the size of the universe. That is, the number of people possible to graduate. Many die of gang killings, drive by shootings, go to jail, quit going to school, or other disappearances and this reduces the population before they compute the percentage that graduates. If you have a particularly violent year, the graduation percentage could go up 10 or 20%.
Something besides the usual run of depressing union-controlled education performance. Maybe Hispanics are ‘getting it’ and hve the potential be a substantial future Republican constituency. OTOH, imagine how mind-boggling better this situation would be if we enforced our immigration laws. The difference in test scores between legal immigrants and “caucasions” would probably be then probably negligible.
Now if they’d teach the kids something before they graduate...
Unfortunately these so called ‘graduates’ are less educated than ninth graders were in1974.
I am appalled at how little is taught in the modern school setting
I congratulate them.....just like I would have congratulated the Irish immigrants and the German ones and the Italian ones....
I hate illegal immigration, its wrong, but I don't hate the Hispanic population...
“Graduation-Lite” has cured the problem; next?
It’s amazing all the rosy press we are hearing now over the last few days. Everything is being solved right before our eyes.
Or could it be a sycophantic media trying to boost the man child’s agenda.
As far as any report from a government agency, it isn’t worth the paper it’s printed on.
Pat yourselves on the back, schooling industrial complex, you’ve lowered standards enough to make the typical HS diploma so worthless its only function is to screen out non-hackers for low-skill jobs.
And even then its usefulness is born solely from its ability to gauge attendance.
You hit the nail on the head. If you lower the standards enough, you can pass just about anyone. All that this means is that a high school diploma isn’t worth the paper that it’s written on.
If you lower the hoop to 7 feet, there will be a lot more Michael Jordan’s.
well, the testing is getting too easy.
Kids passing high school should know not only basic math (arith + algebra) but also calculus to some extent (more for the math-aptitute, less for the linguistic), should know their country's history and a brief knowledge of world history pre-1900 and a good knowledge of world history since 1900, they should know geography and the US constitution. They should know middle level science and should know proper English (able to read and report on 19th century novels) and at least one other language.
Simplifying to make it easier to pass is not the way
