Marines and strangers rush to aid of victimized veteran

HOUSTON (KTRK) -- There's a good news update on a home ransacked and spray painted by a pair of teen burglars in northwest Houston. While the burglars are now in custody, community members and Marines stepped in to help the homeowner -- a 93-year-old World War II veteran.

The Marines quickly marched into the defaced home of WWII veteran Elbert Wood, eager to help.

"It's important that he knows we're here for him and that we're always his brothers," Major Roberto Rodriguez said.

The presence of these local Marines is just one example of the outpouring of support for Wood since we first reported the burglary and vandalism of his home on Monday. Two teens, ages 13 and 16, were arrested for allegedly committing the crime.

"My feelings about them are not anger so much as just wondering why they would do something like that," Wood said.

Since then, calls came in from around the country, as former Marines and strangers offered to paint the graffiti-laden walls or replace the damaged household items. Gallery Furniture dropped off a living room set.

> That clipping never gets old. I’ve read it a zillion times round the net and still smile when I get to the last paragraph.

Same here. Sometimes “the use of force” is the only thing that thugs understand. You surely can’t reason with a closed mind that’s hellbent on destruction (in more ways than one). Sometimes you just have to slap’em to wake’m up and let’m know you’re serious. Our current society has tried to reduce the role of men and feminist them so much it would make John Wayne cry. Wait, John Wayne never cries...: )

Thanks for for blurring my vision, Major. I needed that.

I worry about the man. What or who will protect him going forward? You know the punks or other thugs will be back. At the least, the old guy should have a security system.

“Like it or not, Deck Plate Justice had its place at Sea...”

As it had to be. There weren’t policemen/deputies out there, and flying them in was certainly prohibitive, both in time and in money. Just like “the law of the old west”, it was/is necessary under the circumstances. In the old west, law enforcement was often days away. This on the scene justice is often the most effective deterrent to the perpetrator and to others who were considering doing the same thing. Not sure but what some of that wouldn’t be a good thing today.

With the never-ending onslaught of negative news in the press today, it is great to hear a story like this with such a happy ending. Thanks again for posting.

Turn the 13 and 16 year old perps over to the Marines for some very serious “awareness” training. I guarantee they will have a new appreciation of others lives and property.

That's part of what not leaving anyone behind looks like and that's the America I remember and think of.

Regretful that some on high need a little re-education.

Thanks for the link.

It’s up to $50K now, with checks personally delivered to the station - not counting any mailed.
