Mafia's new business enterprise: renewable energy "Because that's where the money is"

Willie Sutton, a notorious theif from the 1930's, was once asked why he robbed banks. "Because that's where the money is," he replied.

So where's the money today? Government subsidies for renewable energy - massive subsidies with little oversight.

In Europe, this means easy pickings for organized crime. And the Sicilian mafia is cleaning up.

Washington Post:

The still-emerging links of the mafia to the once-booming wind and solar sector here are raising fresh questions about the use of government subsidies to fuel a shift toward cleaner energies, with critics claiming huge state incentives created excessive profits for companies and a market bubble ripe for fraud. China-based Suntech, the world's largest solar panel maker, last month said it would need to restate more than two years of financial results because of allegedly fake capital put up to finance new plants in Italy. The discoveries here also follow so-called "eco-corruption" cases in Spain, where a number of companies stand accused of illegally tapping state aid.

Because it receives more sun and wind than any other part of Italy, Sicily became one of Europe's most obvious hotbeds for renewable energies over the past decade. As the Italian government began offering billions of euros annually in subsidies for wind and solar development, the potential profitability of such projects also soared - a fact that did not go unnoticed by Sicily's infamous crime families.

Roughly a third of the island's 30 wind farms - along with several solar power plants - have been seized by authorities. Officials have frozen more than $2 billion in assets and arrested a dozen alleged crime bosses; corrupt local councilors and mafia-linked entrepreneurs. Italian prosecutors are now investigating suspected mafia involvement in renewable energy projects from Sardinia to Apulia.

In the US, the government considers organized crime as wanna-be amateurs, compared to themselves.

A professor who studies the Russian mafia said that the Russian mobs were making a ton of money in the US through Medicare fraud. Every government program is rife with waste and fraud. We all know it, and nothing is ever done about it. The only solution is for government to do only the things government ought to do - public safety and national defense. There should be NO transfer payments or subsidies to anyone for any reason.

Too much benefit of the doubt given when you call the DOE “clueless”.

They may be ideologues, for the most part, but they know exactly what they’re doing throwing money at Obama cronies.

We all know it, and nothing is ever done about it

And, because of Gov't accounting rules, nothing ever will be done about it.

I used to work for an auditing firm. A lead sales-weasel once explained to me that "No how, no way" would the company work with the government again. "It's just not a dependable income stream", he said.

Roughly, for the first six-ish months or so of the year, the auditing firm would find scads of $$$$$ in waste, fraud, abuse, etc. Whichever gov't bureaucrat needed to sign off on the claim would sign it. Firm would collect the money, take their cut, then hand over the rest. Worked great.

BUT...for the remainder of the year, Bureacrats wouldn't sign off on any claims..... for the simple reason that they couldn't spend "found money" fast enough. And, if it was in their budget at the end of the year, it was cut. Talk about your perverse incentives....

So, IMHO, gov't can spend money like a drunken sailor. The supposed watchdogs don't *care* where it goes, so long as it goes. And any interested third party auditors can't turn a legitimate buck off the game because it's so badly rigged....so they don't play.

In this country, wherever the unions dominate, you can expect to find organized crime as well. Heck, aren’t all the crony capitalist partners of the Obama administration just as bad as any organized crime syndicate. Richard Trumka is already in there pushing for those union jobs on every single federal project.

And....while I'm on my soapbox...

Story went around the same audit firm about a gov't fraud ring that got busted.

Some company was ripping off (I think) the DoD to the tune of millions on some parts delivery scam. The only reason that they were caught was that they got greedy, and started billing in the millions of dollars for deliveries that should have been 1/100th (or less) of that.

Auditor who told me about it said "If they hadn't been so ridiculously stupid, they'd never have been caught". Made me wonder how many con artists are flying under the radar by only adding ONE extra zero to their bills, instead of two or three.
