Please Take Away My Right to a Gun
The New York Times ^ | Jan 18, 2013 | Wendy Button

Posted on 01/23/2013 9:16:24 AM PST by heartwood

A FEW years ago, I awoke at 2:30 a.m. to more than a “rapping, rapping at my chamber door.” It was a full-force pounding of a body trying to break into my little house in Washington, D.C. It was the sound and scenario that, as a single woman living alone, I feared more than spiders in the house.

....I considered buying a gun. The threat of violence rattles you like that. What rolled round my head after that dark morning was: what if I hadn’t heard the noise, what if it’s different next time? While I held that chair with all of my strength, I wished that I had had a gun because if he had gotten in, then I could have pointed it at him, maybe deterred him and if necessary pulled the trigger....

...

[Then] I remembered who I am.

I am one of the millions of people in this country who live with depression. I knew that in the gun registration form there would be a version of this question: Have you ever voluntarily or involuntarily been committed to a hospital? The answer is yes — voluntarily. But because my hospitalization was years earlier and I wasn’t in treatment at the time, I could have gotten a gun.

I can't be trusted not to poke myself in the eye.

Please take away my right to fingers.

Oh, and it's only fair to chop off the fingers of everybody else in the country, too.

So, these people with depression (read the comments in the article) seem to be saying that they were smart enough to recognize that they had no business having a firearm. Sounds like pretty good self-policing to me.

The article itself makes reference to the 19,000+ people who took their own lives with firearms last year. Okay, let's see how many people took their own lives by other means.

Hmmm... look at that! there were also over 19,000 people who died by other means - 6,600 by poisoning, 9,500 by suffocation, 2,900 by other means.

So, please, don't try to claim that restricting guns will save all sorts of lives of depressed people. It won't.

A truly suicidal person almost always has a plan in mind for how they intend to take their life. If someone talks about killing themselves, one of the first things that health care professionals ask them is (and you should too, if a loved one starts talking like that), “Do you have a plan?”

If they do, then the method they have chosen is secondary. (I know, I know - some suicidals say they would choose a firearm over some other method ‘because it is more certain to ‘get the job done quickly’ than other methods.’ If they don't have access to a firearm, then a truly suicidal person will find a way to accomplish their life-ending desire.

If they don't have a plan, then they are most often (at least at that point in time) not really suicidal. (And, yes I DO know what I'm talking about from personal and professional experience.)

So, once again, we have yet another group of people who are clamoring to restrict our right to defend ourselves ‘for the (children, depressed, mentally unbalanced, ...)’ when, in fact, it isn't the gun (or knife or car or bottle of booze or ...) that is the root cause of violence, depression, suicide, etc.

So, let's not pretend that it is.

It is all about personal responsibility. If you are not responsible enough to own a gun, then don’t own one. But why force your decision onto everyone else? Maybe you are an irresponsible driver - should car ownership be illegal? Grow up, Wendy, time to act like an adult.

IMHO, she should be begging for her Freedom of Speech and Freedom of the press to be taken away, so she won’t be able to write anything this idiotic in the future.

Wendy Button

Hey Wendy baby. I've got a handful of pills for you left over from some surgery. If you promise to wash 'em all down with some booze, I guarantee you won't be depressed again, and the rest of us will be spared your moronic twaddle in the future. Come on, you know you want to do it.

Conservative logic: I don’t trust myself to handle a gun responsibly, therefore I won’t own one.

Liberal “logic”: I don’t trust myself to handle a gun responsibly, therefore NOBODY should own one.

“Democrats should not be allowed to own guns. They are not mentally stable.

That was exactly my take on this.

If you can’t be trusted to own and carry a weapon, you shouldn’t be running around loose. Be a good little progressive and turn yourself in.

Oh yeah? Well you can have MY fingers when you pry them one by one, cold and lifeless, from around the grip of my handgun. :-)

The NYT will never publish an opinion piece by a man saying "Please take away my right to have sex with other men."

You're right. But the New York Times is the best of the propaganda pushers. When they go under or get bought out their people can get jobs writing press releases for Obama ...

Liberalism IS a mental disorder. We haven’t had much success in outlawing mental disorders so how about just outlawing liberals?

So many heads of household can now take comfort that Wendy Button is safe from herself as the home invasion crew rapes, sodomizes and murders their children.

All I needed to read was the headline.

No you little weasel, make the choice yourself. Be disarmed or armed as you desire. Take responsibility for yourself.

I will do the same.

The GOP is not trying to win. Quislings.

Quislings is the word. The GOP is the Official Opposition susidiary of the Democrat Party. That includes most of the Tea Party Cngressmen who weemingly wimp out right along with the Boehnerites and give us unlimited warrantless detention and the presidential right tokill any American anywhere any time.

The requirement for doctors to report suspicions of possible mental illness sets up a liability trap for doctors if someone goes on a shooting spree and his doctor has not reported him for mental aberrations. Doctors will pull hat trigger far too easily, those that are still practicing after next january 1. It takes a special kind of craven toady or masochist to continue in practice after the full weight of Obamacare kicks in.

If done right, I’m all for people voluntarily rescinding their 2nd Ammendment rights. Folks should be allowed to voluntarily put themselves on a “no buy” list. Their names and addresses should be published to ensure that, in a time of weakness, everyone knows it is illegal for them to buy.

We could call it “Darwin’s List.”

We need to demand that loss of voting rights be tied to any loss of gun ownership rights.

And the gun control debate is over in 5-4-3-2...
