Nielsen says that 20.6 million people across 18 networks watched President Obama be sworn in for his second term Monday. As we noted yesterday, NBC led the way among broadcasters, with CNN topping cable news.
The 20.6 million figure was down from 37.8 million viewers in 2009, a drop of 46%. That said, it was an improvement over George W. Bushs second inauguration in 2005, which saw a similar percentage drop from his first.
In a post explaining the numbers, Nielsen throws in this factoid:
Viewership has historically slid for second term inaugurations. Pres. Richard Nixon is the only president in recent history that has seen an increase; he notched a 22 percent increase during his second term inauguration.
Does that include people like me hurling all day because it was on TV at work?
Well, his legal votes were probably off that much, too, but that didn’t stop the horrible event from happening.
"I'd rather be caught braiding the hair on the a** of a sheepdog"
Probably. Would be interesting to see how much of the CNN viewership comes from captive audiences at airports, banks and businesses that are set on CNN all the time.
Ya seen one, ya seen them all.
He forgot to hand out those FREE Obama TVs.
Saw a picture of Michelle’s lizard skin dress. That was enough for me.
Given the choices, (1) Watching the inauguration, or (2) vomiting and enduring intense pain due to the flu, I selected (2) as it was more pleasant than (1).
20.6 million? That’s a lot of people that really need to get a life.
I work in a nursing home and it was on in the dining room during lunch. I was walking around rolling my eyes and mumbling under my breath. LOL Was so glad when someone finally turned it off and put the radio on. I can’t stand to hear or see Obama. Makes me physically ill.
ZERO. Only Neilsen Familes are counted in ratings.
Thanks. Didn’t know that.
i thought RUSH said only 7 million watched it.
