NYPD will begin testing a new high-tech device that scans for concealed weapons

Get ready for scan-and-frisk.

The NYPD will soon deploy new technology allowing police to detect guns carried by criminals without using the typical pat-down procedure, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Wednesday.

The department just received a machine that reads terahertz — the natural energy emitted by people and inanimate objects — and allows police to view concealed weapons from a distance.

“If something is obstructing the flow of that radiation, for example a weapon, the device will highlight that object,” Kelly said.

A video image aired at a Police Foundation breakfast Wednesday showed an officer, clad in a New York Jets jersey and jeans, with the shape of a hidden gun clearly visible under his clothing when viewed through the device.

The department will begin testing the high-tech device for use on the street. The device is small enough to be placed in a police vehicle or stationed at a street corner where gunplay has occurred in the past.

Kelly, who first discussed the possibility of using this technology last year, said the NYPD has been working with the London Metropolitan Police and a contractor “to develop a tool that meets our requirements.” “We took delivery of it last week,” Kelly said at the gathering at the Waldorf Astoria. “One of our requirements was that the technology must be portable ... “We still have a number of trials to run before we can determine how best to deploy this technology. We’re also talking to our legal staff about this. But we’re very pleased with the progress we’ve made over the past year.”

The New York Civil Liberties Union last year raised concerns about “virtual pat downs,” and some security experts have said false positives could lead to unjustified stops.

4th amendment, in fact, no part of the Bill of Rights is an impediment to your oath and loyalty to the Constitution.

Flat out Un-American and absolutely Anti-American.

LEO will become predators if they are not now.

Well thankfully it only works on criminals.

That's a given.

If you are carrying a gun, you are a criminal.< /statist mode >

I picked that up too. A bit of salesmanship from the author.

That's an excellent point.

Under the present conditions in New York City, one might expect that most people concealing a weapon are "criminals". When this is no longer true, then the invasion of privacy which would occur by revealing what is inside the pants of a law-abiding citizen would become even more stark. No Warrant, No Zap.

This device probably has a false positive rate of 50%, but no matter, it gives police another “probable cause” excuse to search and detain anyone.
No need to wait for the phony dog sniffing routine.
The tyranny is hardening. We are transitioning into a hard tyranny.

“But it might not be a bad idea to get illegal guns off the street. “

How can a scanner tell a legal gun from an illegal one?

Of course it only works if you are carrying on your person. My purse emits no such radiation to be blocked. Just sayin....

Great idea!!!if everyone had several gun shaped cardboard cutouts (or metal ones, I don’t know how thick the material has to be) hidden randomly in their clothing we could have the police out there ridding the city of cardboard shapes all day long! The new scanner would be In the trash in days!

We ‘all’ should be a little, well a lot scared.

Don’t forget an 8 yr old can be taken into custody for a ‘paper’ gun or pretend gun so if an adult does it the charge will probably be a FELONY as you are impeding an investigation.

If they are now admitting it, how long has something like this been in use?

We didn’t know what ‘profiling’ was till a couple of cops went on public TV and ‘bragged’ about it, while profiling has been in use since day 1.

If you are at a lumber jack convention and there is a murder and the murderer was described wearing a colored, checkered shirt and was tall, the police already have scads of potential murderers/suspects.

See Post 14. I think I retracted that statement.
The scanner can't tell the difference between legal and illegal. But Cuomo will make them all illegal. Everybody will become a “bad” guy.
