Ted Turner's son vying in SC congressional primary (R)
Associated Press ^ | 1/23/13 | Bruce Smith

Teddy Turner inherited his love of sailing from his father, media magnate Ted Turner. But there is less of a family resemblance when it comes to politics.

While the elder Turner leans Democratic, Teddy Turner is running as a Republican in a crowded race for an open South Carolina congressional seat created by a U.S. Senate appointment.

"My dad asked, 'What's the minimum amount I can give because you're a Republican?'" Teddy Turner, 49, said. "My dad has been asking for years, 'How the heck did you become so conservative?'"

Wouldn’t vote for Teddy Jr. just because of his a**hole Dad. I know it isn’t fair to hold the son accountable for the sins of the father, but generally the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. He needs to get elected to a city council or county commission position to establish his conservative bonafides before he tries for a seat in congress.

Before he was not allowed to buy a network (CBS?), Ted Turner was widely thought of as a conservative himself, at the time, many of us thought that was why he couldn’t make that purchase.

Teddy?!

Ted Turner named his baby boy after himself and called him Teddy Turner?! And he’s competing against Mark Sanford in the S. C. Cong. District 1 REPUBLICAN primary?!

I’ve heard everything now.

Heard Ted Turner...expound upon his views of the population dilemma. Certainly, would solve a lot of issues if Ted would follow the path of his daddy.

Wish young Teddy well but he has to prove himself...

That's true. He was even interviewed at one point by The Review of the News, the weekly newsmagazine of the John Birch Society. Apparently he took a hard left for business reasons.

Apparently he took a hard left for business reasons.

So he could buy AOL? Well, he sold his "conservative" soul mighty cheaply. (Cannot get over his naming his son after himself and calling him Teddy. Must have been thinking Roosevelt.)

They do! They can choose Teddy Turner.

But since neither you nor I live in that district, let the voters in Charleston have their fun. In the revered, and soon-to-be often-quoted words of U. S. Secretary of State Hillary R. Clinton, "What difference...does it make?"

That was definitely the view at the time, he just became a full blown lefty overnight, which managed to change him in the media's eye, from evil capitalist, media manipulating monster, to media hero, honest and responsible.

I enjoyed that story. Thanks for posting. AP omitted that Senator Scott is the only African-American senator in the US Senate and he’s a Republican. Or it was so buried, I missed it.

It pains me to think that Ted used to be a sort of hero of mine as a young man.

I grew up racing sailboats and Turner was the skipper of the US boat in the America's Cup back then. It was my/our sport and we cheered him on.

Now imagine, one of your childhood sports heroes turns in to a major leftwing jagoff.

No wonder I'm so screwed up, can I sue that SOB?

Having an “R” after one’s name means absolutely nothing anymore. He can go pound sand.

He was also married to Hanoi Jane...if he had been a real conservative she would have had a 'kitchen accident'.

If I saw either one of them in a crosswalk in front of me I would have a brake failure and see how good their reflexes are.

Teddy Jr.? Probably turn out to be about as conservative as Arnold Schwarzenegger (married to Maria "Turn into a commie for mommy" Shriver, whose daddy was McGovern's butt buddy.)

Jane Fonda was a part of that re-imaging into liberal hero, and it all worked, the media came to love Ted Turner.

I don’t know whether he would be good for the job or not, but it speaks well for him that he has sufficient intelligence and wisdom to resist his father’s harebrained influence.

Ted Turner is a highly intelligent man and a very fine man, but somewhere along the way he lost his way.

He strikes me as kind of off, there is a little bit of real, deep, stupid-ness mixed in with his self absorbed, single minded business brilliance.

I think you’re right. Really smart in some ways. Really un-smart in other ways. Many people are like that.

And unfortunately the smart part isn’t smart enough to recognize the un-smart part and avoid a kind of self-congratulatory hubris.

Agreed. But as with anyone closely associated with a lefty, you’ve got to wonder if it is on the level or just an act. Same reason I don’t trust Mary Matlin’s conservative credentials; she is married to that lefty snakehead James Carville.
