LOCKPORT, La. -- There was a step toward closure in a shocking case in Lockport on Wednesday, as authorities announced charges against their prime suspect in the killings of 29 year old Jacquelin Nieves and her daughters, Gabriella, 7, and Izabela, 1.

Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre describes the suspect, David Brown, as a “serious, habitual violent criminal.”

"(Brown) has been arrested multiple times, almost every year of his life, since the time he was a juvenile,” Webre said. “He has been incarcerated multiple times."

Now, Brown could face the death penalty.

In the early morning hours of Nov. 4 -- while Jacquelin and the young girls slept -- authorities said Brown sexually assaulted two of the victims and then stabbed all three, before setting fire to their apartment.

Officials said Jacqueline's husband, who was sleeping on the couch downstairs at the time, woke up and dialed 9-1-1 after realizing the apartment was on fire.

According to police, Brown was a co-worker with one of the Nieves family’s neighbors, but otherwise, had no connection to them.

Investigators said extensive evidence connects Brown to the crimes, including a match of DNA from the scene, and surveillance footage that places him in the area at the time.

"This is one of the most horrific crimes in the history of Lafourche Parish -- three beautiful people, a loving mother and two wonderful children, who were violently killed while they slept in the privacy of their own home by a violent criminal monster," Webre said. "If he is convicted, our expectation is that the years would be a life sentence, but our expectation is that'll be shortened by a lethal injection."

Brown is charged with numerous offenses in the case, including first-degree murder, aggravated rape and aggravated arson.

He’s being held on a $3.3

Some people live a lifestyle that has a high risk of something bad happening to them. I look at that woman and those kids and think about my family. They had no idea they’d be savagely murdered. . You can go on my computer and find pictures similar to those: smiling, happy kids, a smiling wife, not a care in the world.

We need to stop putting up with this kind of thing. When I say “we” I don’t mean our government, judges, and police. I mean WE, you know, The People.

Slooooooowwwwwwly through the the wood chipper, feet first. And you can take a page out of Adolph Hitler’s play book. If he passes out, stop the process, revive him, and continue.

As usual, why was this thug even out on the streets? A habitual violent offender (convicted) since childhood?

But I guess it’s just hard luck for people like the Nieves family. After all, the ACLU is in the process of filing a new suit to reducing sentencing for crimes.

According to people like Diane Feinstein, you don’t have the right to defend yourself or family from animals such as this. The bill she supposedly introducing today should be called the rapist and murderer protection act.

The poor husband, sleeping through the murder of his family - how will he live with that?

And the police had to have treated him as the primary suspect for a while.

Impalement sounds appropriate to me. The old school way.

I read too many of these stories where the man of the house or another adult was “sleeping” downstairs or in another room. Without much more I assume he was drunk or zonked out after a 24 hour xBox marathon.

Nothing happens in my house without me or the dog hearing it. You might be successful getting in but getting out is another matter.

He might have a job that brings him home at hours disturbing to the rest of the family.

He might have been so tired from overwork that he fell asleep and they chose not to wake him.

He might have been sick with something like flu and did not want to give it to the family....

There are lots of other reasons.

They guy probably has enough psychological damage without such comments.

Sometimes I sleep light sometimes I sleep heavy. This is why I have two dogs. I don’t have little dogs but little dogs often have the keenest hearing, to the point where you just want to strangle them.
