CATO Institute Guns and Self Defense Map
CATO Institute ^ | CATO

This is a USA map of Guns used for self-defense.

Gun control proponents cannot deny that people use guns successfully against criminals, but they tend to play down how often such events take place. The purpose of this map is to draw more attention to this aspect of the firearms policy debate.

It is not comprehensive, but is useful.

The mere threat of defensive guns is what prevents every rural family in America from systematic attack. What else is there?

I am not clear on the scope of time for this data, and saw no indication. Are these points for the last 24 hours, the last year, all time? what?

I live 7 miles outside of town. Out of the police jurisdiction. The county sheriff told me it would take up to 30 minutes to get a car to my house if there was not one in the area at the time I had to call. Thus, 30 minutes for the crooks to burn, loot, rape, murder, whatever my family. THUS, WE ARE ARMED!!! I ain’t giving up my guns!

You bet! In my small, rural town, most folks are armed and the crime rate is very, very low.

My little town doesn’t even have police. We contracted with the county and that’s a waste of money since a patrol car rolls through about once every 2 or 3 weeks now.

On the other hand, we don’t have much need of police around here because the people are heavily armed.

My former Governor Fast Eddie Rendell denies that guns have EVER been used defensively. He’s the one that was THRILLED and HAPPY that Sandy Hook was so horrible so it could be used to confiscate guns.

Rural homes would be prime targets for home invasions, thefts, rapes etc, if it weren’t for the simple fact that rural homes are the most likely to be armed.

Ditto here in rural Maine. We don't have and don't need town police. If you call the sheriff, you might get a deputy here somewhere between 30 and 60 minutes. And, virtually everyone is armed.

We had 1 shooting about 5 years ago and everybody involved was an outsider from over toward Detroit.

We did have the big FBI raid on the Hutaree militia a couple years ago but they were all acquitted.

If Congress outlawed burglary and assault, therefore causing these crimes to disappear, the second amendment would still be as necessary as ever.

The second amendment is not about crime, or hunting. It is about keeping the USA free from oppressive government.

Those other elements are just fringe benefits of being an armed society.

“I am not clear on the scope of time for this data, and saw no indication. Are these points for the last 24 hours, the last year, all time? what?”

As you click on each point it expands to show the exact location and describe the nature and date of the event.

“simple fact that rural homes are the most likely to be armed.”

And the dogs gives a warning prior to trouble arriving within shooting range!

It’s not just that these homes are armed. The concept of community exists where neighbor looks out for neighbor. No one passes by someone else in need.

I remember when I was young how the neighborhood would go together and donate money, livestock, hay, building materials and labor to have a barn raising party if someone had a fire. People helped people and there was no insurance.

I currently work extensively with Amish & Mennonite horse and buggy communities. I’ve watched people write $10,000 checks to help non-family members pay medical bills. These folks work together and help each other. Also, they won’t take a government check for anything. When refundable tax credits began, they came to me with many thousands of dollars in checks and wanted to return them to the IRS.

People helping people at the local level is the only way this country can survive.

“And, virtually everyone is armed.”

How else can you protect your livestock when a critter gets after them. It keeps a safety zone within shooting range of the house. If you have ever seen a pack of wild dogs attack a cow, horse or sheep, you would never go without a loaded gun handy at all times. It’s just common sense!
