Meet the 23-year-old squatter who's moved into palatial $2.5MILLION waterfront mansion in Florida
The Daily Mail Online ^ | January 25 2013 | SNEJANA FARBEROV

Andre Barbosa can safely say that he has one of the nicest homes on the block in Boca Raton, Florida. But the 23-year-old Brazilian national does not own or even rent the palatial $2.5million estate legally - he is a squatter.

Barbosa, originally from the neighboring Pompano Beach, moved into 580 Golden Harbour Drive in July Now he is threatening to use an obscure real estate law that allows people to claim a property as their own if they stay there for seven years.

No one witnessed Barbosa breaking into the 7,522-squae foot, five-bedroom, six-bathroom waterfront home, so he cannot be arrested.

And Bank of America, which foreclosed on the house, so far has done nothing to evict the 23-year-old and reclaim the property.

Other residents in the tony part of Boca Raton where most home sell for upwards of $1million want something done about the unusual living arrangement.

Next-door neighbor Lyn Houston told the Sun-Sentinel that she had approached Bank of America last week with an offer to buy the foreclosed house that Barbosa has been calling home, but she has received no response.

‘We're all going crazy, trying to figure out what to do,’ she said. ‘It's unbelievable that it can be done. Plus, if they've got the balls to break in the house, what's to prevent them from coming over here?’

Not sure that’s an accurate statement. I live in NE Fla. This happens here occasionally and every time it does our sheriff escorts these scumbags to the iron bar hotel.

IIRC to do what this guy is doing he must pay property taxes on the property he’s squatting in.

If he can verify that he’s been there seven years (phone, electric, etc) then give him the house.

this is another example of what we are importing here along with the illegal riff raft, their codes of legal.

You are correct about NE Florida, Duval Cty, would have him out on his backside but then again this is not south florida, comprende? Besides it is social justice. The various immigrant panderers and social agencies and ACLU would probably stand behind him, unless one of them lived on the same block.

Just hand him the property tax bill. He’ll be gone.

No one witnessed OJ commit murder -- so why the heck did they bother to arrest him????

“Just hand him the property tax bill. He’ll be gone.”

I believe paying property tax is one requirement to do what he's trying to do but unless it's enforced nothing will happen.

Sounds like a fairly affluent neighborhood, you’d think someone there would have the “pull” to get action from the city.

This is actually a good idea. Once this young Communist takes adverse possession, he’ll own a several million dollar mansion. He’ll then be one of the “rich” who can pay property and other taxes to support the masses he loves so dearly.

Years ago my wife and I bought a nearby house. When we went to move in we learned that the “owner” had abandoned his family for a 19-year-old hottie, had never paid his mortgage, the house was in foreclosure, and squatters had been living there and keeping warm by building fires on the living room floor and trashing the place. Yes, our lawyer sucked. But we had no place to move and thus spent the next several months sleeping on the floor at my mother-in-law’s. Ah, memories...

No kidding. That's one of the dumbest things I've ever read. If there's plenty of evidence, but no witness to a crime, nothing can be done? Who writes this tripe?

Squatters and people that buy without intention to pay is a much more commonplace activity in the beachfront areas then people like to admit.

This was going on a lot during the last 15 years.

Yeah, I think he and the writer of the article have seven months confused with seven years.

If he’s not the owner of the property, and is present on it, then he’s trespassing, and should be arrested.

Obviously, this is not a sustainable situation.
