NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - Tennessee has declared a state of emergency as a precautionary measure to get emergency operations under way as the eastern portion of the state continues to see significant icing.

Although ice was beginning to melt in Middle Tennessee by midmorning on Friday, Tennessee Emergency Management Spokesman Jeremy Heidt said the state Highway Patrol was working 20 separate wrecks in the Clarksville area.

Best to take the train.

First time I’ve ever seen a forecast of “ice pellets”.

We started the morning off with snow pellets, then sleet, then light rain that froze on contact, but main roads were sprayed with brine yesterday. Tough to walk on, interesting to drive on untreated roads or parking lots. Not heavy enough to cause power outage. But, it’s going to continue into the evening. I’m in NC.

Climate change, it’s devastating.

Of course most of the broadcast meteorologists are fervent believers now, so every 3 inch snow and 0F overnight is hyped as a “winter disaster of epic proportions”.

Otherwise known as sleet, lol.

There actually are snow pellets though, had those this morning. Looks like snow falling, but it bounces. Roundish little pellets, like styrofoam or something.

Sometimes they also call it graupel.

Sort of, lol. Not quite that large. You can’t hear snow pellets like you can hear sleet.

"Roundish little pellets, like styrofoam or something."

Yeah, fairy poop.

Seriesly, graupel is that squishy stuff in which much air has been incorporated. Sleet, fairy poop without a stool softener, makes a noise when it slams against your bedroom window. Graupel, or snow pellets, doesn't.

Freezing rain occurs when rain becomes supercooled falling into a shallow layer of subfreezing air. If the cold layer is thicker, then sleet forms.

It's all a function of the vertical temperature profile prevailing in the atmosphere at any given time or place.

And Dick Cheney's weather machine of course.

We had those about a month ago here in the Detroit area. Quite unusual, I thought.

Not long ago, here in Memphis, I got to see it “pouring sleet” for the first time ever.

I do not miss living down there. This ice partially melts diring the day and re-freezes at night. Impossible to get in a vehicle let alone drive one. A 1/2 inch diameter branch can get covered with 2 inches of ice.

What we’re getting now is light rain freezing on contact. No icicles, just a lumpy coat of ice on everything that hasn’t been brined. You can see where the splat of the raindrops have frozen.

Hope it stays light or changes over to something frozen as it falls, otherwise power outage is in the cards.

What’s the big deal about winter storms? Snow happens. Blizzards happen. Wind chill happens.
